Yorkshire Terrier Training Made Easy

  • 16/08/2012

Yorkies are spirited and very assertive. Being an alert little canine, a Yorkie will bark at almost anything. The hardest parts of Yorkie training are potty training and the elimination of excessive barking.

That's why Yorkie training is a must if you both want to be happy. Below are some basic Yorkie training tips.

Early Socialization - Get Him To Stop Barking

Dogs were not bred to live in isolation. They need to be around each other. The sooner you start to socialize your pup, the better socialized he will become.

In addition, the more you expose him to other humans and his own four legged fellows, the less he'll bark because he won't feel intimidated by every sound.

He won't be afraid of his environment as much. A key reason dogs bark is because of separation anxiety. Putting your dog in the company of others makes him less lonely and therefore, less likely to bark. So, the first step in Yorkshire Terrier training is to take him to a dog park.

Take Him To A Dog Run

As soon as your Yorkshire gets his shots, take him to a dog run so that he can learn to relate to other dogs. Taking your dog to a dog park where neither of you know the other dogs or their owners can be a bit frightening.

Fortunately, many dog runs are divided into sections so that your Yorkie can play with other little dogs. Many dog runs have sections designated for little dogs.

Doggy Day Care

If you're nervous about taking your Yorkie to a park where you don't know the other dogs, another alternative would be to take him to a cageless all day doggy day care facility. This is not the same as boarding.

There are many "doggy day care" centers, but it's crucial that you pick one that is cageless so that your Yorkie can freely socialize with other dogs and learn the pecking order.

A crucial aspect of Yorkie training is that your dog learn the pecking order. Dogs train each other.

Taking your dog to doggy day care will alleviate your nervousness. As you continue to take him to doggy day care, you get the relief of knowing that your dog is in safe hands.

Also, an advantage to doggy day care is that you get to know the other dogs that attend regularly. This knowledge will give you a feeling of security.

Set Up A Consistent Schedule

Yorkie training requires having a schedule. All dogs need a consistent schedule. It's how they learn to regulate their bowels. A schedule also teaches them when it's time to play, eat and sleep.

Use A Crate To Train Him

Crate training is a great tool for Yorkie training. Crate training is used for housebreaking a dog. You want to use the crate to teach your dog not to poop in the house. Just make sure your dog is not the overly anxious type.

While crate training is a marvelous tool for housebreaking, it's not the best tool for every dog. Some dogs are terrified to go in a crate. If your Yorkie is not terrified of a crate, I highly recommend you crate train him.

Use the crate early in your dog training. Get him to go in his crate by luring him with his favorite treat. Once he goes in the crate, close the door. Stay with him in the room so that he's not anxious.

Only leave your dog in the crate for 2 to 3 hours at a time. Never use the crate as punishment. Your dog must see his crate as a place to go for sanctuary. After about 2.5 hours, take him out of the crate and take him outside to go potty.

Conclusion

By implementing a consistent schedule and using a crate, Yorkie training becomes an easy and fun task. Would you like in-depth Yorkie training advice? Click here for some of the best dog training guides online.
