Would a Kerry Blue Terrier Be Suitable For a First Time Dog Owner?

  • 22/11/2010

Many times when a person decides to get a dog, they decide to pick one because of the way it looks or for some other reason. For every dog a person chooses, there is a reason behind it. Most times when people get a Kerry Blue Terrier it is either to have the dog for working purposes or as a show dog. However, there are still a number of owners who purchase a Kerry Blue Terrier for companionship reasons. No matter what the reason behind getting a dog of this breed, it will still require a high level of care and responsibility and that needs to be remembered.

One of the many things people find out from owning a Kerry Blue Terrier is how difficult the breed can be. A person will learn by investigating information about the breed that they can be quite troublesome. However, most of their behavior depends upon the way the dog is raised and how they are trained. IN fact most people that are novice dog owners have no problems loving the animal and this is one thing the breed needs; this shows the dog that they are a valuable and much-loved member of the family.

Many people are unsure of whether or not the dog makes a suitable choice for a first-time owner. However, it pays to remember there is no one perfect breed for an inexperienced owner. Many people have said that Kerry Blue Terriers make an all around great choice for a family pet. The only thing a novice pet owner needs to remember is to make sure the dog receives early obedience training as well as socialization to reach their full potential. In fact when it comes to other dogs or animals, the Kerry Blue Terrier can exhibit aggression if not properly socialized. If the dog does not get proper socialization it can result in the dog becoming uncontrollable. Many people wait too long to train and socialize and find out later how strong willed and stubborn the dog can truly be.

Another important piece of information to know regarding a Kerry Blue Terrier is about the dog's coat. Most people believe the coat of the dog is the same as other dogs, but this is not accurate. Even though the coat is wavy and soft, it requires regular maintenance and may need to be professionally groomed, which can be expensive. A Kerry Blue Terrier needs to have a bath every 3-4 weeks, grooming should be done every 4-6 weeks by a professional and daily brushing by the owner is a necessity. Grooming the dog is very important so the coat does not become tangled or matted.

There are many things a person needs to know prior to bringing home a Kerry Blue Terrier. The dog can make a great and loving family pet; it just takes love, patience and training to allow the dog to learn how to act in an acceptable and proper manner. With lots of love and a little training, you will have the perfect companion.
