What to Look For When Choosing an English Bulldog Puppy

  • 27/01/2014

One of the cutest dogs available is the English bulldog puppy. The chubby body and hundreds of wrinkles is what draws so many people to this particular dog breed.

What many people don't realize is that these dogs need special attention. They come with various personalities and depending on the bulldog puppies you have chosen, will decide if the dog can grow up in a loving family or is better served in an older child home.

It's essential that you know before you rush out and reply to an advert offering bulldog puppies for sale that this breed are handful. Generally these dogs remain pups until they reach at least three years old, only then they start to mature. Most dogs mature at around two years old.

Another important consideration is their life span. These dogs seldom live past ten years old, while other breeds can last fifteen years and in some cases twenty years or more. This is a very serious consideration before making any decisions as it can have a devastating blow on the family when the dog passes on.

When replying to any adverts for this particular breed, it's essential that you buy only from a reputable breeder and not from a "puppy farm." Reputable breeders will make sure good bloodline and their dogs are the integral part of their family, ensuring that when your pup arrives at your home it is well socialized.

Another important aspect is that the breeder should not allow you to take home your new bulldog puppy until he or she is at least eight weeks old and has already had the first set of inoculations. You should also be advised of any relevant paperwork on collection, so you know what the next steps are.

When you arrive at the property to look at the bulldog puppies for sale, make sure that the breeder gives you full access to the pups and enables you to visit with the parents. This is so important because by seeing the mother and father, you can get an idea on the personality your dog will have later on.

Bulldog puppies tend to have five different personality traits, some are suitable when it comes to children and others do better in a single dog home with an older couple. The dominant dog is a perfect choice if you're looking for a guard dog that won't require much affection, while the independent dog is also best suited for a childless or older child home.

Obedient dogs are great for older people, though this isn't always the case with this breed. The affectionate ones are great with family homes with younger children and the unpredictable dogs are often the ones that end up in the pound because they are stubborn and have a mind of their own.

Be very careful when choosing your dog. Walk into the enclosure and see if any of the pups run up to you and your family to greet you. Do any of them overpower the others, are any desperate for attention and looking for affection?

Finally, don't be surprised when you have to pay a deposit for your new family pet and the deposit is a four digit number. These are expensive dogs and rightfully so. What most people don't realize is that this particular breed only has small litters, usually five or less. They also have artificially disseminated and the female has to have an operation to have her pups because of the size of their heads. This causes a huge cost for breeders which push up the price.
