What is an English Bullmastiff?

  • 31/10/2010

An English Bullmastiff is a cross bred between an English Mastiff dog and an English Bulldog.

They are powerfully built with great strength and endurance and also possess great alertness to their environment.

They have an intelligent, courageous and protective nature but at the same time they also very faithful and sensitive to their pet owners.

An English Bullmastiff weighs between 110 to 130 pounds. They have dark eyes and large nostrils and short dense coat. If you're thinking you are in the market for one of these fine creatures, they can be a bit on the expensive side. Their price ranges from $800 to $1,500 and generally, there will be somewhat of a waiting list if you do wish to buy an English Bullmastiff.

As for their appetite... this type of breed consumes about 3 to 6 cups of dry food and actually loves vegetables as treats... veggies such as carrots, broccoli, and green beans.

Obedience is a very important aspect for any dog owner. Unlike other dogs, imposing obedience and discipline on an English Bullmastiff can be quite challenging, because they have a strong-willed nature. This is why it is important that you train them early on. Believe me, it is a lot easier to train them while they are still puppies as opposed to when they are already quite bigger than you.

As part of your dog's early training you will want to train your dog to be sociable. This means that your pet should be exposed to other dogs, people and evnvironments. Right away start taking your dog to parks and walks is a great activity for him. This is a great way to get your dog to grow up in environments around people and other dogs. If you get in the habit of doing this early and often, your dog will learn that aggression is not their natural primary reaction.

English Bullmastiffs are great family pets when they live in the house with the loving adopting family. Keeping them outside in a kennel or chaining them with only minimal attention will only serve to enhance their aggressiveness.

It is a good idea to have them run free around a fenced yard. This helps to promote exercise and health... and happiness.

When brought up properly, it is great to have one of these dogs for your pet. They make fantastic guardians and a wonderful company. They are loyal, faithful and willing to protect you when called upon.
