What Do You Expect With a Bulldog?
- 01/01/2014
Many people will choose a bulldog based on purely how they look. Bulldogs are a good-looking breed of dog, and they are very cute. But, owners who choose their dog on looks alone are unprepared for looking after the dog and they are more likely to give the dog up if they can't cope or the dog is not what they expected.
The aim of this article is to educate these people and to make sure that they know what they are expecting when they come to buy their dog and bring them home.
Exercise
Right, bulldogs do need their exercise. They will like a morning or evening walk and they will wait for their walk with their leash in their mouth. However, if you are expecting your dog to run beside you on your evening run, swim for miles or go on an obstacle course with you, then the bulldog is not for you. If you were looking for company on a walk around the block or in your local area, then you would be happy with a bulldog.
Temperament
The bulldog is a very friendly dog. They get on well with children and they are friendly towards adult strangers and other pets. They will even enjoy the company of other pets.
Whilst the bulldog breed is not generally thought of as a guard dog breed, they are very loyal and they will offer you some security because they love you.
The bulldog wants love and will like your attention. They enjoy being part of your family and will stay close to you. If you are sleeping in bed, they are found sleeping at the foot of your bed. If you are on the couch, watching TV or reading a book, don't be surprised to find the dog sitting next to you or with his or her head in the crook of your arm. Wherever you are in the house, expect your dog close by.
Bulldogs do like to nap throughout the day, but just because they are lying down with their eyes closed, doesn't mean they are fully asleep. Bulldogs are actually very alert and they can go from sleeping to following you around, in a few seconds.
Their Looks
It is no doubt that bulldog puppies are very cute. You should cherish the time you have with them, when they are puppies because it goes quickly. However, the good thing about bulldogs is that they stay cute throughout their lives.
They will grow up and get bigger but their cute chops on their face will remain the same. They are a very good breed to have, if you want a good-looking dog.
If you only want a dog for the looks when they are younger, then you should not get a dog. A dog is a lifetime commitment and you should love the dog for the span of its life.
Life span
You should expect a bulldog to live for about 10 years, if they are healthy and well looked after. This is the average life span for this breed. This all depends on things like their diet and how much exercise they get. That is why it is so important to look after them and look into the life of their parents when you are choosing a breeder who has bulldog puppies for sale.
You need to know details about their parents health, and their grandparents health, so you can amend the plan for looking after them, so. You will want to make sure your bulldog lives a long and happy life.
Insurance
If you want a bulldog, you should think about purchasing some pet insurance. This will mean that you will have the cost of your vet visits taken care of with a monthly payment. You will know that you can afford to take care of the dog when it gets sick, and you should take the dog for a yearly check up.
The best way to make sure your dog is healthy is with these check ups and make sure your puppy is healthy to begin with. If you buy from a breeder who is offering the puppy for under $1000, then it is likely to have some health issues already. $3000 and above is the good price for a healthy dog.
