Weimaraner Training: How Alleviating Separation Anxiety Can Aid You And Your Dog

  • 26/11/2010

The Issue
Many dogs experience separation anxiety, but Weimaraners are one breed that is a bit more likely to succumb to this disorder. They do have a propensity to become incredibly dependent on their owners in a way that's unique to the breed. They do require a great deal of attention from their owners, but they do give the same kind of attention in return. With Weimaraner training to alleviate separation anxiety, it is possible to gain back some control of your house and create a happier, well adjusted dog.

Dogs are pack animals. Like all pack animals Weimaraners thrive on the comfort they feel as part of a group, even if the group is nothing more than one person or alpha leader belonging to the animal. However, it's not always possible for people to spend twenty four hours a day giving their dog the attention it craves.

If your dog isn't used to being by itself, it will be natural for it to feel anxious when the pack leader (you) is away. Your dog may feel that the pack's survival is threatened when it's left to it's own devices. To avoid this anxiety developing altogether, it's best to start getting the dog used to being on it's own from a very young age. Adult dogs can also be taught, but it's often much easier to train puppies in this area.

Stay Calm and Be Patient
Training may not be easy, but if you're patient and develop a routine that you actually stick to, it can make the process a lot faster. It's not always easy to be patient, kind and keep a positive attitude when you have to deal with coming home to find your house in a shambles. Weimaraners are notorious for excessive chewing and digging when bored or anxious. Your dog will be very happy to see you, but you, most likely, may not reciprocate the feeling. Your first reaction may be to scold the dog for it's bad behavior, but you'll find that this does not work. The next time you leave and come home, you're likely to find the same kind of destruction as you did before the scolding.

Relaxing an anxious pet may not at first seem like a problem, but to anyone who's been in this situation you know how much stress and drama there can be to deal with. Good behavior and a calm submissive pet is something anyone would desire after a few devoured couches and destroyed rooms.

What To Do
Weimaraner training to alleviate separation anxiety often begins with tiring him or her out. Lots of exercise, especially before you leave is a good way to put him or her into a peaceful, restful state. Before you leave make sure you give the dog food and a few treats as a reward. Supplying them with lots of toys and proper things to chew on might prove to be helpful as well. After a while, if this routine is persistent, your Weimaraner should begin to become more at ease with being left alone, because all of the negative energy will have been worked out before you leave your house. It won't be instant, but with time and patience it is possible to achieve the desired results and keep your house from looking like a tornado just blew through.
