How to Stop Your Weimaraner Puppy from Chewing
When your Weimaraner is still very young, a lot of people will let their Weimaraner puppy continue to chew on anything they want to. Or they will shout at the puppy, which will only confuse the pup as it does not know why you are yelling and can lead to other behaviour problems. You need to find medium between to two, to show the puppy that trying to chew on your personal belongings is not the way to go.
Ways to Stop Your Weimaraner from Chewing on Items
Now is the time to put a stop your puppy's chewing behaviours, these are a few basic ideas. Don't hit your Weimaraner at all or yell at your Weimaraner openly. Many times you will get angry with the puppy but don't take your anger out on the puppy. It will just confuse the puppy and they won't know what they are in trouble about. Have a look at a few more options as shown below.
Behaviour adjustment - Now it is time to stop letting your puppy chew on all of the various items in the household, teach your puppy to chew on a number of different items of your choice that you have selected to distract your puppy with. When you find your puppy starting to chew on your favourite cushion, just get a toy of to replace with the cushion and then praise your puppy when it chews on your choice of toy. Your puppy will learn that the new toy is good to chew and the cushion or other items are not. Do not buy any chew toys that resemble household items.
Keeping your puppy active - To stop your Weimaraner puppy from chewing, on items you need to give them things to do so that your puppy isn't bored. A puppy will always be looking for something to chew on to keep them active, even when they are not teething. Give them a variety of ways to exercise that will stimulate their interest. When you're not at home be sure that you leave some toys that will keep them stimulated and active.
Aversion sprays - One way to stop your Weimaraner puppy from chewing on items like the side of your lounge or a favourite pair of shoes, which they could very easily ruin, there are two popular items you can use. Bitter Apple is the first item and Cayenne Pepper is also popular. It will not taste very good for the puppy. They will work out quickly to associate those particular items with a terrible taste that will stop your puppy from chewing on certain items.
Being consistent
Don't give your Weimaraner the opportunity to chew on any clothing you leave about, make sure you tidy up all the items that you don't want your puppy to chew on. Don't let them have any toys or items that you haven't allowed the puppy to have. At all times make sure that you follow the rules that you have lain down to reinforce the rules with your puppy. Your Weimaraner will then learn quickly that chewing will not be tolerated and it will become less of a problem.
