Vizsla - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting a Vizsla

Breed Description
The Vizsla is a medium-sized breed with a muscular body. These hunting dogs have a wedge-shaped head with long and tapered muzzle. Males usually measure 22-24 inches tall and weighs between 46-60 pounds, while the females stand around 21-23 inches tall, and weighs between 40-55 pounds.

Coat
The Vizsla comes with two coat varieties namely: the Smooth and the Wire. The Smooth type has short, dense, and shiny coat that lies close to the body. The Wire, on the other hand, is harsh, hard, and loose fitting. Unlike the Smooth, the Wire variant is not glossy, and has a winter inner coat. Their coat colors may range between golden to russet.

Activity
The Vizsla is a very energetic breed that will require vigorous daily activities. They thrive on a home with a large securely fenced area, or a dog owner that can provide them jogging session's on-leash. Aside from that, they will also need constant mental stimulation including playing sessions. Their great stamina makes them unsuitable for apartment setting.

Temperament
The Vizsla is generally a sweet dog that is very affectionate and loving. These sensitive dogs are highly active and are great athletes. They will require a great deal of exercise and human company. These dogs should be trained and socialized at a young age to have them gain confidence as they grow. If they do not get enough attention, they tend to become destructive and anxious. Potential dog owners who travel constantly is not recommended for this breed. Not a city dog, this breed will do great in a country setting and active family.

Overview
The Vizsla is a hunting dog that descended from Turkish yellow dog and Transylvanian hound. The name of these Hungarian dogs literally translates as pointer, and are skilled scent and retriever hounds used to find birds and small game.

Care
The Vizsla requires minimal grooming. They will only require occasional brushing with a stiff bristle brush, and dry shampooing only when necessary. Bathing should be done with mild soap to avoid stripping these dogs of their protective oils. It is also important to trim their nails from time to time.

Training
The Vizsla is a trainable and highly intelligent breed. The fact that they are eager to please mean that training will be quite easy for them. But, the challenge that comes with this breed is the tireless energy it has. It should therefore be channeled into an acceptable ways such as training. These sensitive dogs will not respond well to heavy-handed or harsh training techniques. Known to mature slowly, they tend to have short attention span, and will easily get bored especially when young. So, keep training sessions short and interesting with a lot of praise and rewards.

Character
The Vizsla is generally gentle and loving pets. They do great with children, and even strangers, too, if well-socialized while young. These active and highly energetic dogs make excellent companion dogs for the active family.
