Vital Needs of a French Bulldog
- 19/06/2013
Dogs are different, even within the same breed no two dogs are different. Each dog is a unique individual and should be regarded as such. Frenchie like other dogs have special needs that will keep them comfortable, healthy and at their best.
Vital needs of a French bulldog are:
Proper shelter
French bulldogs are very sensitive to hot weather and may suffer from heatstroke if left out in the sun for too long. Most Frenchies are indoor dogs and may at times be left in very small spaces that will greatly restrict their movement. The dog will need a dry and cool place to sleep, some people prefer to buy crates to confine their Frenchies. The crate should be suited to the Frenchie, that is, be correct in size. It should be placed in a well ventilated space especially if the dog will be spending a lot of time in it.
Be sure to clean it every once in a while particularly if the dog has made a mess in it. If there are any beddings in the crate or just newspapers they should also be washed and/or dusted.
Good nutrition
French bulldogs require a well balanced diet that supplies all the nutrients that the Frenchie require to be at optimum in terms of growth and maintenance. If the diet is lacking in any way then supplementation is necessary to avoid any conditions as a result of the deficiency.
Exercise
French bulldogs have a very sedentary lifestyle. Exercise is good to keep them fit and in good body shape. French bulldogs are very prone to obesity if not on a good exercise regimen. French bulldogs cannot stand vigorous exercise and should therefore be subjected to mild forms of exercise for a short period of time. Never exercise a Frenchie in the heat of the day, the best time is early morning or in the evening when the sun goes down.
French bulldogs can't swim neither can then jog beside you and trying to get them to may have fatal consequences. A good walk is enough to provide your Frenchie with all the exercise he needs.
Health
French bulldogs should be taken for their regular check-ups and it is important that inoculations are up to date.
These dogs have a tendency to have allergic reaction to substances in the environment as well as in food and should be evaluated and the necessary precautions taken.
If you do not plan on breeding your dog, then have them spayed or neutered. This will reduce the risk of some diseases.
TLC (Tender love and care)
French bulldogs love attention, they will appreciate being taken care of and take pleasure in being the centre of attention. The best food, doctors in the world cannot give the dog the satisfaction he gets from being loved by his owner. A neglected dog will become destructive and may be more anxious and stressed causing some health problems to develop. Owners should spend uninterrupted time with their dogs whether to take a short walk, play or just sit together on the sofa.
