Training King Charles Spaniel Puppies - The Mindset You Need to Train Your King Charles Spaniel Dog

  • 22/11/2010

This breed also known as the English Toy Spaniel, came about in the mid 1600's where a King Charles Spaniel was interbred with a Pug. This inter-breeding resulted in a much smaller sized dog with a rounded head and a much flatter nose. The King Charles Spaniel became a favorite for royalty almost immediately.

This breed is very playful, gentle and all around a positive breed to have as a family pet. You will definitely need to be gentle with this type of breed, but you must be firm at the same point. Being extremely intelligent they will sense how serious you are in training. These King Charles Spaniels are very good with children and are definitely not the best watchdog in the world, but rank in the top 10 at least. Here are some tips to help you train your new dog:

The number one thing that a successful animal trainer should do is secure the confidence and respect of the animal to be taught. This essential piece of information undeniably applies to the schooling of dogs. If a dog can't recognize a pack leader, then he accepts the role as leader.

If you become the authority figure for your dog, then he will be sure in his connection with you making any schooling task easy for him to grasp. Until your dog has grown to rely on and respect you, it will be hard for any training course to be successful. Your dog will come to regard and depend on you in time, but first you have to treat him reliably and fairly. After your dog sees you as his pack leader, you will have an enthusiastic and able learner on your hands.

Most new dog owners confuse love and friendliness for loyalty and respect. While it is of course fine to shower your new dog or puppy with fondness and care, it is also important to gain its trust and loyalty. While a puppy can play the adorable card to get virtually everything that he desires, it is a huge blunder to get started like this. It is to your puppy's best advantage to have limits, rules and expectations.

Dogs truly appreciate these types of limits, since they are similar to the expectations that the pack leader forces in nature. Though the pack leader is at the head of the group, each dog inside the pack also has an structured place above and below his pack buddies.

Good luck training your new King Charles Spaniel puppy!
