Training A Labrador Puppy - The Right Approach

Training a Labrador puppy can seem challenging if you're a first time owner but after some time it is a task which can be both quite fun and extremely enjoyable for you and the dog. Training a Labrador puppy is really a task that could be started almost as soon as you have him - Labradors are truly quick learners and you can both take advantage of training your puppy at an early age.
Training your Labrador will help to build a strong bond between the two of you because you will spend lots of time with each other. Labradors are excitable, full of energy dogs that love to play (even when they are older!). If you aren't able to give your Labrador basic training as a puppy, you will have a problem in the future. Labradors can be very headstrong dogs that jump up on you and other people or pull on the lead while you're out walking which is a habit that you need to be able to control. You should be taking the dog for a walk not the other way round ! Now, you can realise that basic training is necessary.
Fortunately, Labradors are dogs who are quick to understand and enjoy pleasing their master: they are talented with intelligence and ability to learn. Even if you just want your dog to learn basic house rules or whether you need them to be able to complete advanced obedience training, Labrador are one of the easiest breeds to train.
Labradors need a lot of exercise and attention to be happiest and healthiest. You will need to spend quite a bit of time each day taking him for walks, so you want it to be as enjoyable an experience as possible.
When training a Labrador puppy, you can start with basic puppy training and socialisation. Labradors can be one of the best breeds of dogs to keep in the home, even if you have children. Socialising your Labradors at young age is vital as it helps them to become at ease with people in a wide range of situations and helps them learn how you need them to behave.
Teaching them the meaning of basic commands like "Sit", "Stay", "Down" and "Heel" will be extremely valuable later on when you want your dog to do one of these things. Most commands will be enthusiastically learnt by your Labradors puppy helping to make your task as an owner fairly easy afterwards.
Before you start training, decide on which training method you are going to use and ensure this is the training method that you are intending to use for everything you teach your Labradors. Research into the different ways that you can teach your Labrador to comply with basic commands before you start.
The most common training methods uses positive reinforcement. The philosophy of positive reinforcement is based on the fact that animals behave better when they are praised or rewarded for performing a good job.
Anyone who has kept a Labrador knows the fact that training a Labrador puppy as early as possible.
