Tips in Training Yorkie Puppies

  • 26/11/2010

Yorkie puppies are one of the cutest baby dog species in the world. They are known as toy puppies because they can follow commands with serious training. They are also very pleasing to the eyes and they are very smart in absorbing and following directions. From these little puppies, one can truly derive satisfaction and relaxation all at the same time. But before a pet owner can feel very happy with his or her puppy, there are important tips in training yorkie puppies.

First, the age of the yorkie puppy must be seriously considered. This is important to ensure that they can understand and internalize the training. Usually, this is about 8 weeks old when the puppy is old enough to leave the litter and start the basic training. This age is also young enough to prevent old age training problems such as barking loudly and moving around all the time. These can actually piss off the owner and make him or her stop or even worse, quit training yorkie puppies.

Second, the owner must be in an enthusiastic and optimistic mood while training. The feelings of stress, exhaustion or unhappiness can be easily communicated to the puppy through actions or tone of voice. The yorkie puppies are very sensitive so any negative aura can be internalized and wrongly interpreted as anger or disappointment to the dog. There must be enough time to give praises even to the minutest accomplishments. Small healthy treats, hugs as well as verbal praises can reinforce or positively motivate the puppy to perform better and pick-up the lessons quickly. These treats can involve delicious dog cookies or pieces of boiled chicken or beef. This way, the yorkie will feel positive about itself and about the trainer. After each session, a play routine is beneficial to heighten the satisfaction of the owner with the training.

Third, the trainer should keep the training as natural as possible. These puppies are like human babies with underdeveloped control over body functions. Before any training session begins, the yorkie has to be exercised, especially when they have been left alone or enclosed before training. This way, the excess energy can be burned, leaving the puppy focused. Every good action such as urinating or defecating outside must be positively rewarded. The owner should also take note of what the puppy can do naturally. For instance, it is sits, say "sit" or when the puppy goes to the crate to sleep, say "crate". This can help the puppy associate command words with specific actions.

The fourth tip is to keep everything as consistent as possible. Even if the trainer is the one directly responsible for the commands, other people in the house must also use the same commands for the wanted action. Confusion can happen when sitting down is termed as sit by one and down by another. Treatment should also be the same all throughout. If the dog is allowed to sleep in the bed, this must follow with the elderly because if they prohibit this action, the dog can never get used to what is acceptable and what is not.

These tips are indeed very helpful in training yorkie puppies. With patience, consistency and positivity, one can become a great trainer. This way, the puppy can give the desired fulfillment to the pet owner.
