The White German Shepherd: From Wolf To Socialization

  • 16/08/2012

The White German Shepherd evolved from a wolf. Scientists surmised that wolves were becoming closer to living with humans some 14,000 years ago. The theories for domestication differed. Some scientists believed wolves were looking toward human civilization as a place to scavenge for food, while others felt humans were adopting the less aggressive wolves as guard animals and pets. Wolves that were wary of humans are now part of the wild.

There is no dispute, however, that genetically dogs and wolves are almost alike, sharing 78 of the same chromosomes. Their mitochondrial DNA only differs by approximately 0.2 percent. Dogs and wolves each have 42 teeth, and their skeletal structure is identical. Like the wolf, certain breeds such as the white German shepherd and northern breeds have two coats of fur - one for warmth and the other to protect against the elements.

Dogs and wolves are pack animals with the alpha dog or wolf being the pack leader. Instinctively, both a dog and a wolf will protect their territory. They have an acute sense of smell and hearing. When a threatening sound is heard, the animal's ears will perk up. A warning sound may be emitted to other pack members. Also, dogs hold the feeling of dominance and submission in their tails. Here the pack mentality is one of an established group hierarchy. The more confident and higher ranked dogs hold their tails in an upright position. Weaker dogs submit themselves to that of a stronger dog and lower their tails when they feel insecure. As dogs fight for dominance, the fur on their tail stands up. Canines, and many other animals, try to increase their size in front of an enemy.

Due to the nature of their ancestry, the importance of White German Shepherd training becomes clear. You represent the alpha leader of your household and must teach this concept to your dog. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and active animals. Training can begin at any point in time, but mandatory socialization must be achieved at a young age for this breed of guarding dog. Aggressive behavior is not a trait inherent in dogs, rather it stems from a lack of socialization and exercise, boredom and food issues. Also, aggression can result from fear. Although a German Shepherd is large, they can be timid around strangers if not socialized when they are puppies.

In ancient Egypt, dogs were revered. Ancient Greek philosophers heralded dogs as geniuses, while the Romans used these highly intelligent animals as guide dogs. The White German Shepherd is a loyal companion and loving dog who is good with children. As a versatile working dog, they are an excellent guarding and herding breed. White Shepherds are descendants of the German Shepherd line and evolved with an exclusive color and beautiful stance. White German Shepherds, as well as other dogs need to be properly socialized to know their place within our families.
