The Siberian Husky: The Intelligent Working Dog
- 19/06/2011
Siberian husky dogs were primarily bred in order to work, making them incredibly energetic dogs that possess independent, yet loving personalities. Striking in appearance, a Siberian husky is a medium sized dog that can range from 20 to 24 inches in height, with weight varying from 35 to 60 pounds. Similar to other dog breeds, a healthy female Siberian husky will be much smaller than a male.
Siberian huskies can be easily identified by their wolf life facial features which are often emphasised by their striking blue eyes or often, brown almond shaped eyes and pricked up ears. Due to their original purpose, these dogs will possess an extremely athletic body. As they are used to working outdoors, they also possess a very full and thick coat which requires a lot of maintenance and regular brushing as they shed frequently. A husky's coat is made from two layers, with the undercoat being rather dense, helping to provide the dog with a lot of insulation when outdoors in cold conditions. Due to this, during the hotter months of the year, they will shed the most hair from their undercoat. Coat colours go across a large spectrum, although Siberian's are most commonly found with black and white, or a silver and white coat. In order to keep your Siberian husky's coat looking good, you ideally should groom him once a week in order to remove dirt and any matted hair from his coat. When he is shedding during the hotter months of the year, it is advisable to increase this maintenance to 2-3 times a week.
Siberian dogs possess a lovely, natural temperament and are friendly to almost anyone. They can also be incredibly loving but due to their stubborn nature, they can often be choosy as to who they show affection to, making them somewhat fickle at times. Their stubbornness can also make them difficult to train at times as they are incredibly independent dogs and highly intelligent. A Siberian husky dog can also be very vocal, making him a rather good guard dog although he does not tend to like children and so can become aggressive towards small children or small animals. Nevertheless, the Siberian husky has masses of character and if trained correctly, can be a great addition to the family.
In order to maintain a healthy weight, a husky should be fed around 13oz of high quality dog food a day, with additional dog biscuits added throughout the day. They do not tend to enjoy dry dog food, but should you opt to feed him dry food, you should aim to provide him with 5 cups of high quality dry dog food a day. Similar to other large dogs, a Siberian husky has a very good appetite but will often refrain from eating if they are feeling somewhat anxious or agitated. Their digestive tract can also be extremely vulnerable to changes in diet or the environment which can make them susceptible to diarrhoea. For this reason, it is advisable to not change their dog food unless required, and ensure they have plenty of water. Great all natural dog treats such as bully sticks or other bull parts are fantastic sources of protein.
Siberian huskies make for fantastic pets, but are not for the faint hearted. Unsuitable for the elderly or those with small children or small living space, they can be somewhat of a challenge due to their level of intelligence and energy. However, with the correct training and love, they can learn to possess a loving manner and be a great companion.
