The Fox Terrier: Facts You Must know Before Adopting Fox Terrier (wire)

  • 27/12/2010

Breed Description

The Wire Fox Terrier is a terrier breed that resembles the Smooth Fox Terrier. This sturdy, well-balanced breed weighs an average between 15-21 pounds, and stands between 13-16 inches tall.

Coat

The coat of Wire Fox Terriers is at its best if their coats appear to be broken, with fur that has the tendency to twist. Their texture is dense and wiry, just like a coconut matting. Their inner coat is found below the thick strands that are finer and softer. Typically seen coat colors are white with brown or black markings.

Activity

The Wire-haired Fox Terriers require a good jog or long walks on a daily basis. They love roaming around freely in a securely fenced area. Owners should keep them on a leash if small animals are around as these have urges to hunt, and are more likely to go chasing around a small animal.

Temperament

The Wire Fox Terrier has the distinctive characteristic of being full of energy and their high intelligence. They have low tolerance for boredom, and require frequent stimulation, attention, and exercise. They are naturally quick, alert, and prepared to respond appropriately while being eager, friendly, and cooperative. They are loving and very playful if they are provided with proper care. Bred to be independent, they are able to tactically maneuver vermin and other sports.

Overview

Closely resembling the Smooth Fox Terrier, both of them were originally recognized as one breed with two kinds, but are currently considered two different breeds. The Wire variety is more known than the Smooth, and is usually even-tempered and can be trusted around older kids.

Care

The Wire Fox Terrier requires a slightly demanding grooming and can be quite expensive. A professional groomer is required to keep their coats looking healthy. Hand trimming may be needed several times yearly. As this is time consuming, it would be much easier to have someone else do it. It is recommended for this breed to be trimmed starting at the age of three months. They should be combed and brushed several times weekly to keep their coats neat and tangle-free.

Training

Training the Wire Fox Terrier must include obedience tasks due to their high intelligence and energy. It is important for handlers to learn how to properly rear them because they are independent and stubborn by nature. Due to the difficult process of training and the potential aggression they can demonstrate, they are not recommended for first time dog owners. To bring out the best in them, they should be with a highly patient and experienced trainer.

Character

The Wire Fox Terrier is a medium-sized dog that exudes a fiery personality. These terriers are more than willing to take on their enemies, making them excellent hunters, but not as a family pet. This breed is known to be yappy, and tends to nip on rough children. They may also be willful and challenging to train, but if trained, they are stable, friendly, and loyal pets.
