Collies are classed by the AKC as part of the Herding group. Usually weighing in the region of 55 to 80 pounds, and standing anywhere from 22 to 26 inches tall. They usually make excellent family pets due to their protective instinct and highly intelligent nature. Usually very good with children, they make very good companions and valuable family members.

Usually a very active dog, the Collie has plenty of energy and endurance and will fit in well with an active family. This type of dog is not well suited to apartment living as their exercise needs are great. A home with room to exercise would be ideal for this dog.

The coat of the Collie can be rough or smooth haired and a variety of colours, the most common being sable, black, white or some shades of blue. Although a very friendly dog breed, the instinct to protect the herd of livestock extends to the family unit and this breed will also make an excellent guard dog. Also consideration should be given to other family pets. Unless reared together from very early in life, small animals and cats may not mix well with the Collie as the instinct to chase and herd can cause some problems.

If you are getting a puppy, it would be a good idea to try a few obedience classes. The natural energy that a Collie has can start to cause problems the bigger the dog gets. You will need to ensure that any bad habits and naughty behavior is caught in the early stages so that you may end up with a well rounded adult dog.

This breed of dog has a very good record when it comes to health. They rarely suffer from disease and usually have a good lifespan. Most common problems will be Eye disease and PRA (Progressive retinal atrophy). Being such an energetic animal, care should be taken if you spot any limping or lameness as these dogs can injure themselves by over exertion, jumping and running. Other than this, they are a healthy breed.

You should feed a Collie three meals a day to avoid over eating. They love a good meal and will sometimes eat too much if the food is available. Any signs of excess weight should be dealt quickly and your Veterinarian can advise on a good balanced diet for this breed of dog.
