The Bernese Mountain Dogs Description and History
- 31/10/2010
The Bernese Mountain Dog is an old breed. It is generally accepted that when the Romans were in Switzerland about 2000 years ago, they left behind some of the dogs they brought with them. These dogs became the ancestors of the modern Bernese. There are four kinds of Swiss mountain dogs and many view the Bernese as more popular than the St. Bernard. The Bernese gets it's name from the canton of Berne.
This breed is becoming more popular every day. It is unusual that the Bernese was developed to pull carts. Weavers and cheese makers in the city of Berne used these dogs for this task. Nowadays, these dogs still pull carts and give rides to small children at carnivals and shows.
These dogs are tough and hardy. They are also faithful and loyal and usually prefer just one master. A Bernese may behave in a distant and reserved manner toward strangers and refrain from making friends outside of the family he lives with. This is a cold climate dog who prefers an unheated kennel. Not suited for living in apartments or any warm climate.
The Bernese Mountain Dog is usually jet black with russet brown or deep tan markings on all legs. The coat is soft and silky with a bright and natural sheen. The coat is long and slightly wavy, but never curly. The height is 23 to 38 inches for males and 21 to 26 inches for the bitch. The dogs weigh 60 to 70 pounds while the females weigh less at 50 to 65 pounds.
