Breed Description
A medium-sized breed, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has been originally developed for bear and bull fighting. They typically weigh around 24-32 pounds, males usually weighing up to 6 pounds heavier. They stand at about 14-16 inches tall at the withers.

Coat
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a short, dense, and sleek coat that is close fitting. Coat colors usually come in blue, black, red, fawn, and brindle. White markings may appear on the black, fawn, brindle, and blue colored breeds.

Activity
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier requires a daily walk after reaching 12 months to keep it healthy and fit. They should never be taken out for long during hot climates as they tend to overheat. A lot of fresh water and balanced diet is crucial to keep them healthy. The athletic nature of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier explains why they would require a vigorous exercise on a daily basis. They would highly benefit from a free run time off-leash in a securely fenced yard, and play sessions with family. This breed will generally do alright in an apartment setting if given sufficient exercise, stimulation, and companionship.

Temperament
Although reputed to be aggressive with other dogs, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is generally people-oriented and loyal. It is important that between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks, they be socialized particularly with children and other dogs. Some are known to be friendly even to strangers, as well. So, they may not make great guard dogs.

Overview
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has been developed during the 19th century as a small and sharp fighting dog. But, those have been buried in the past. This breed is presently a fine companion that is reputed for high intelligence, love for children, and great courage.

Care
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier requires only a minimum amount of grooming. They will only need an occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush and bathing every once in a while. This breed will not tolerate extreme temperature, and is appropriate as indoor pets. Although a generally healthy breed, they are known to be prone to hip dysplasia, luxation patella, cataract, and epilepsy.

Training
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a highly intelligent breed that learns quickly. They get bored easily, so constant stimulation is important. They should be provided sufficient exercise prior to training to avoid destructive behavior. They should also be provided with chewing toys including a Kong or a bone to keep them from chewing on furniture. This breed is happier when tired, so have them exercise more often. It is suggested that this breed be Crate Trained to keep them content and safe while owners are away.

Character
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is highly undeserving of their reputation as a fighting dog. In fact, they are extremely affectionate dogs that are highly loyal and devoted to people, especially children.
