Breed Description
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a short but sturdy breed. This well-proportioned dog is medium-sized and would usually weigh around 30-35 pounds for females, while weighing 35-40 pounds for males. Their height would usually range about 17-19 inches for females, while 18-19 inches for males.

Coat
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a single-coated breed with silky coat. They have somewhat long and wavy coat covering their entire body at uniform length. These dogs are black at birth, and gradually get lighter. By the time this breed reaches two years, it will have a wheaten color with wavy exterior.

Activity
As with all of the terrier breeds, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier enjoys running and playing. These dogs are a naturally skilled with all games of chase, and will easily familiarize family member that would play with them. This breed will generally exercise themselves quite well enough indoors, but they will also benefit a couple of long walks throughout the day.

Temperament
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a cheerful and happy breed. They are confident, amiable, and usually act puppy-like even when full-grown. This breed is a spirited one that will get along well with gentle and older children. With proper socialization, they can get along well with other pets. But, some have appeared to be aggressive with dogs of the same sex. They tend to bark to warn making them excellent watchdogs, but they are generally sociable and friendly despite their bark. These dogs are responsive, intelligent, and quick to learn.

Overview
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has been popular in Ireland for a little over than 200 years. This breed has been served as a guarding and herding dog that undertook the terrier's typical duty of rat control.

Care
Grooming the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier should require a result of a natural look. In caring for their coats, brushing is not recommended as it is naturally fuzzy. Instead of daily brushing, combing is advised for their profuse long coat. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done only when necessary.

Training
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is highly intelligent and will quickly understand what trainers want. These dogs can be used in agility, hunting competitions, and obedience trials. Their skills in problem solving makes them ideal for this, and while they are less independent compared to that of the most terrier breeds, willfulness can be less of a problem for them.

Training the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier should be started at an early age through positive training methods. This will enhance the bond of the owner and the dog, as well. As with all the terrier breeds, repetitive training will cause this breed to be less compliant.

Character
Although a medium-sized breed, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is among the largest terrier breeds. This breed is a mixture of courageous spirit, and a happy disposition in life.
