Breed Description

The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized breed that has a wolf-like exterior. These working dogs have powerful legs and study build. With compact bodies, the males usually weigh around 45-60 pounds, and stands between 21-23.5 inches tall at the withers. The female, being slightly smaller, weighs around 35-50 pounds, and generally stands between 20-22 inches tall at the withers.

Coat

The Siberian Husky is a double-coated breed that can withstand extremely low temperature. They have a soft undercoat and a thicker and a little coarse outer coat. They commonly come in jet black, silver black, black and white, black and reddish black, wolf grey, grey, sable, copper, and chocolate copper.

Activity

The Siberian Husky is a highly energetic breed. Mushing is one of the most effective ways in burning this breed's pent up energy. Mushing is harnessing dogs to a sled for transport or recreation. This can also be done as sports. Musing is naturally practiced in areas with enough snowfall. Carting, a form of mushing in a dry land exists as well. This will allow these Huskies to run off and satisfy their working needs, providing them both mental and physical stimulation.

Temperament

The Siberian Husky is typically calm, attentive, friendly, and sociable. As with other working dogs, these independent dogs can be hard to handle. They may require experienced dog owner to firmly train them. Although these dogs do not bark that much, they are known to whine and vocalize with a yowl sound. This can be avoided through proper training. Their inquisitive nature and friendliness makes them poor watch dogs.

Overview

The Siberian Husky is a compact northern breed that has the speed, endurance and strength that allows it to carry light loads at long distance with great speed.

Care

The Siberian Husky requires regular grooming such as brushing, bathing, and care of eyes, ears, feet, teeth, and nails. They usually shed their inner coat twice a year which takes about two to three weeks. These social dogs do not like to be left alone, and will be better off with a companion dog. Although this breed is a relatively healthy breed, it is common to see hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and eye problems such as cataract, corneal dystrophy, and progressive retinal atrophy.

Training

The Siberian Husky is an intelligent breed that is not easily convinced to do jobs they do not like. Training these dogs can be challenging, but all worth the effort. Proper training provides all dogs the capability to speak and think the same gauge as humans. These dogs should be kept stimulated, happy, and busy. The length before they get house trained vary greatly on the methods used and on each dog. Using strong positive methods in a consistent but firm manner works best for this breed.
