Samoyed - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Samoyed

  • 15/01/2011

Breed Description

The Samoyed is a mid-sized breed that measures 18-20 inches tall for females and 20-22 inches for the males. The males generally have a masculine appearance without roughness and females have feminine exterior without looking weak. These dogs are graceful, yet active and strong.

Coat

With a long and thick coat, the double-coated Samoyed will require a great deal of grooming. The outer coat is typically harsher than the undercoat, but still somewhat soft to touch. The inner coat is short, thick, and woolly in texture.

Activity

Originally bred as working dogs for the Siberian tribesmen, the Samoyed is relatively a hardworking breed that thrives on outdoor activities. These dogs will excel at agility and training, and will love going for a long walk daily. A good thing for this breed is that although they are generally active, after getting the sufficient exercise they need, they will settle with their packs, and get a good rest.

Temperament

The amiable Samoyed has a steady and kind nature. They are included in a family, instead of being just a kennel dog. They are naturally protective especially with the children. They will require a lot of time with people, as they enjoy being fondled with humans, and are generally not over-active like that of other large dogs. This friendly breed is excited when family arrives home, and will gladly welcome and greet everyone.

Overview

The good-natured and kind Samoyed can be a little mischievous. These family dogs have a lot of love for people, particularly children. These dogs have developed a close proximity with humans, and therefore enjoy being around them.

Care

The Samoyed's coat is easy to care for. They will only need combing and brushing once a week, taking around 30-40 minutes each time. Bathing is not necessary as long as their coats are groomed regularly. Always keep their nails filed and cut short, and consult the veterinarian about their dental hygiene.

Training

The Samoyed training is not an easy task, and will require to be started at the earliest. It is always important to ensure a lot of variety of training drills for this breed. As constantly repeating the same command over and over can result to a stubborn dog. They should be taught at a very young age to come when called, and arrange a lot of positive encounters with other household animals. Authority must be established by the owner as early as possible, with a friendly touch. Shouting or screaming and hitting the Samoyed will result to a disrespectful breed of dog.

Character

The Samoyed has the looks, the brains, and the personality. This affectionate and loyal dog will need to be included in the family, not left out in the yard all alone.
