A Rottweiler with too much energy can be very draining for the owner. When you leave your Rottweiler on its own for a few hours and come home to a dog that quite literally cannot stop fussing, the first response is often frustration and anger. But, for a Rottweiler with too much energy prone to excitement, anger is the last thing you want to exhibit. You may feel tired, but your dog is ready for action!

Many owners attempt to understand what it is that causes this level of excitement in their Rottweiler. It can be hard to pinpoint exactly where all the bouncy, barking excitement comes from at times, but in other instances it might be as simple as pure boredom.

Helping Your Bored Rottweiler

A bored dog needs one thing - more attention. And for a dog like the Rottweiler, that attention should come in the form of as much exercise as possible. Over 90% of the time, the biggest culprit here is that your Rottweiler is being allowed to sit around the house and not do much of anything. That lack of action can make it harder for your dog to relax and enjoy his life. But, how much exercise do Rottweilers really need?

Rottweilers were originally bred to work in very demanding jobs such as cattle herding, guarding and law enforcement. If you have chosen to own one of these kind of energetic breeds of dog, you should not be surprised to find out that your Rottweiler needs a LOT of exercise. I am talking 2-3 hours a day of walking, playing or running to stimulate his desire to work.

Dealing with your Rottweiler's Separation Anxiety

Sometimes, the over excitement can be a simple matter of anxiety related to your comings and goings. As the first step, stop rewarding your Rottweiler for his excited greeting behavior when you return home. You'll only make it worse for everyone in the long run.

Instead of giving your Rottweiler extra attention when you come home, ignore him for 10 minutes or so and never allow him to jump on you. When you have more time, you can start teaching him to stop reacting so vehemently when it is time for you to leave the house. This can take a lot of time and patience. You'll simply be going out and in of the door for very short periods of time, stretching out the amount of time your Rottweiler will be by himself. Leave your dog with an interesting toy, such as a kong filled with peanut butter and his own space to sleep.

Calming a Rambunctious Rottweiler

The easiest way to calm a Rottweiler that is too wound up, assuming he is getting enough exercise, is to train him. Thinking through your commands will make your dog use his mental capabilities, giving him the much needed mental stimulation. The more intelligent the dog, the more work he needs to thrive.

This starts with teaching your dog that you are the alpha pack leader, in total control of your household. Then you will need to train your Rottweiler in basic obedience commands like sit, stay, down and quiet. When Your Rottweiler is focusing intently on following your instructions, he will forget the source of his excitement and reach a calmer state that is much easier for you to control.

Not all Rottweilers will calm down completely. Some individual dogs are just more excitable than others. But, whenever your Rottweiler gets so excited that it infringes upon your family's daily schedule and activities, you will need to give your Rottweiler some special attention to help reduce that overabundance of energy.
