Purchasing a Bulldog

  • 10/04/2013

Buying a bulldog pup can be one of the most rewarding or disappointing experiences...it all depends on how you look at it. There are many people who breed bulldogs as well as many bulldogs up for adoption from shelters, dog pounds and rescue centers. What do you consider before buying your bulldog? What are some of the things to ask the seller/breeder?

Tips on purchasing a bulldog

- Buy from a reputable breeder. Breeding healthy bulldogs with sound temperament is not a onetime affair; it requires genuine dedication and many years of hard work to perfect.

- Awareness is your weapon when on the search for a good bulldog, take time to learn about characteristics of bulldogs, health problems you are likely to encounter and his temperament. This will help you in identifying the best bulldog to suit your lifestyle.

- Ask questions.

a) Has the dog received the necessary inoculations?
b) Can you see the litter mates of the dog you are about to buy?
c) Is the puppy/dog registered with the relevant club?
d) What references does the breeder/seller have?
e) How long has he/she been breeding bulldogs?
f) Can you see the parents of the puppies?

It is not always possible to get affirmative answers to all your questions. However, if the breeder/seller avoids your questions or just plainly refuses to answer them, then this is your cue to walk away.

- Never buy a bulldog you have not seen, if you can visit the kennels or premises of the seller and ask to see them. Choose a puppy that is lively, interested in what is happening around and friendly. You can also judge the puppies based on their mother's temperament, thus you can ask the breeder to show you the dam.

- Price is usually a good indicator of quality, though at times this is not always the case. If you are buying from a litter and one pup is highly priced than the others or has a lower price than the litter mates, don't make assumptions. Ask the breeder about the price difference.

- Draw up a contract with the seller and in it you may include details such as the price, registration and any guarantees that the seller might offer especially with regards to the health of the bulldog. This document is very important and after signing each party should retain a copy.

- Bulldogs are friendly dogs, avoid buying any bulldog that is aggressive. Pay attention to the physical condition of the dog, go for a puppy/dog that is well fed, looks healthy with no discharge from eyes and ears.

Good breeders will show concern for their puppies thus will have questions for prospective buyers. Such people will inquire about what preparations you have made for the dog's arrival. They will be quick to volunteer advice regarding taking care of the bulldog such as feeding, grooming and housing. They might even offer you a pamphlet with this information or direct you on where to get correct information on bulldogs.

Do not rush into buying a bulldog; this is when many mistakes are made. Take your time to avoid making a choice you will regret.
