The Pug (also called the "Dutch Mastiff" or "Dutch Bulldog") is a toy dog. They feature a flat face, big eyes and a fawn and black or pure black coat. The breed first originated in around 400BC and providing companionship for the Chinese royal family is the purpose they were originally bred for. They're popular as a companion dog for families or apartment dwellers in the modern day. They are recognizable by their adorable appearance, charm and playfulness. They're believed to originate from China around 400BC and their earlier ancestors are similar to those of the Pekingese and Lhasa Apso (all records were destroyed, so it's unknown for sure).

They are identified as a small sized dog. The suggested male and female size is 10-11 inches high with a weight of 14-18 pounds. The breed is well-known for their pleasant and charming temperament. They are unsuitable as a guard dog, as along with their small size they are usually friendly towards people they haven't met. Compared to all other dogs, they are identified as being fairly clever, and are ranked 57th when being trained to comprehend new things.

They are great with children, which can make them very suitable as a family pet. They do combine peacefully with other animals like cats, rabbits and other dogs. One simple task is looking after their coat. They call for a full-body groom every couple of months, and minimal brushing of their coat every week or so. They very easily be suited to life in an apartment, but prefer a small (though doesn't really need any) backyard that gives them space to run around.

They are primarily longer-lived, as with most small sized breeds, and have a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health concern is obesity due to their love of food, and they are also vulnerable to skin problems, allergies, breathing issues or epilepsy. Things like indoor games and play sessions will keep them entertained. They demand short walks each day to avoid the development of destructive behavior because of their low to medium degree of energy.

If you bring home the Pug you must be able to give them a high amount of attention and basic training. They're a good option for families, retirees, apartment dwellers or other fun loving owners, but not the best option for people living in extreme climates. One of the more appealing things when it comes to this particular breed is that it is easy to fall in love with for its adorable appearance and charming temperament.
