Breed Description
The Pug belongs to the Mastiff and toy dog group which is the only breed in this group that is fond of children. Often described a lot of dog in small space, they weigh around 13-20 pounds, and stands between 12-14 inches tall at the shoulder.
Coat
The Pug is a fine-coated breed with short and glossy cloth. Smooth to touch, this breed's coat is slightly broken and with a curly tail. They come in apricot, silver, fawn or black colors, with black mask.
Activity
Although not generally active, the Pug is content living anywhere with his master. But, owners should take note that even though this breed doesn't exercise that much, it is important to encourage them to stay active. This breed can gain weight easily. So, make sure that the Pug is taken for a walk at least once a day, in 10 minutes or so. Ensure that this breed is not over exercised as they can lose their breath easily and start to wheeze.
Temperament
The expression of the Pug lays the fun-loving in this breed's character. These are sociable dogs, and will tend to be stubborn about a lot of things. They are generally charming, playful, and clever. Reputed to be successful in dog obedience skills, these dogs are highly sensitive of human's tone of voice. Although this breed typically gets along well with other pets and dogs, they would prefer the company of humans, and would require a lot of human interaction. Or else, they will become agitated or anxious if they are disregarded.
Overview
The Pug makes wonderful pet especially for the first-time dog owner. However, they should be determined to give this sensitive breed the special care needed. As long as they are given the ideal love and care, they will remain a healthy companion for life.
Care
Pugs are generally easy to care for when it comes to grooming. This breed will require brushing and combing once or twice weekly. Folds on their faces must be cleaned regularly. Since this breed is a seasonal heavy shedder, they should be given extra care during these days to keep their fur off the furniture's. Aside from grooming, there are a lot of health issues for this breed. They are highly sensitive to extreme temperature, and can catch colds easily. They are also prone to a lot of allergies due to their short muzzle.
Training
The smart but stubborn Pug can be trained with little patience and persistence. This breed will do anything for food, and training with treats, toys, and a lot of praise is best for him. Training should start right away, with short sessions each time as they tend to become frustrated and boring easily.
Character
The Pug is a unique breed that is clownish, and extremely funny. Although comical, they are able to carry themselves with dignity. These dogs are very eager to please, learn, and love. The only requirement this breed needs is love.
