Proper Care for Bulldogs
- 19/06/2013
Bulldogs require proper care if they are to live up to everything people say about them. Good care will also keep your bulldog in good health and make him/her one very contented "bully." Caring goes beyond just feeding the dog and giving him a place to sleep. Proper care for your bulldog is a complete package that encompasses health, cleanliness and comfort of the dog.
Grooming
Bulldogs are easy to maintain, their coat is short and only needs to be brushed regularly. Bulldogs like other dogs do not require to take a bath often, a bath once a month is good enough. Their nails should not be allowed to grow long and thus will need to be clipped every once in a while. Teeth should also be brushed to prevent tartar build up and to ensure that no bad odor are coming from the mouth. Wrinkles on your bully's face need to be cleaned since dust and moisture may accumulate in these folds causing an infection. Cleaning is done using a wet cloth, corn starch or baby powder is then applied to dry up the area.
Feeding
Meal times as well as amount and type of food will depend on age, physiological status, health status and level of activity of the dog. Ensure that the dog receives a sufficient amount of food. The food should also be nutritionally balanced. Puppies need to be fed more since they are growing.
Exercise
Bulldogs are very sedentary dogs thus are very prone to obesity. Regular exercise is necessary to keep them fit and healthy. Owners should note that these are not working dogs, thus should only be exposed to mild exercise for short periods of time. Exercise will also help control the chronic chewing that is portrayed bulldogs. Do not exercise when it is hot outside due to the intolerance of this breed to heat. The best time to exercise is in the morning when it is cool and later at night.
Health
Bulldogs suffer from some health problems. That aside you need to take your bully to the vet for his regular check-ups. The dog should also receive the necessary inoculations in time. This will ensure that the dog remains healthy and that diseases are caught early and the necessary actions taken.
Never self prescribe drugs for your bully. Bulldogs are very sensitive and will react against some drugs, thus before using any drug ensure you consult the vet for guidance.
Other Things to Take Note Of
Bulldogs are chronic chewers that can easily destroy a lot of things in the house. For this reason ensure your bulldogs has chew toys that he can dig his teeth into and minimize the chance of him chewing on the wrong things.
Since they are highly prone to allergies that will result in itching of the skin, get preparations that are soothing for the skin and that will improve coat condition. You may also ask the vet to prescribe you a drug that will come in handy in case of any hypersensitivity reactions.
