Pomeranian Training

  • 19/06/2013

These are lively dogs with a great personality. Pomeranians have lots of energy and can be strong willed when they want to be. These dogs may be small but they are very intelligent and this makes them good candidates for training. These dogs make for very good house companions and are very loyal to their owners.

In training a Pomeranian it is important to take into account their huge personality as well as their tendency to take time to learn new things. Training a Pomeranian takes time, but in the end the results will be very rewarding for both you and your dog. Training also help form stronger bond between you and your Pomeranian. This bond is necessary in order for you to understand your dog better.

Two aspects that most people have difficulty with when training their Pomeranians are house training and curbing excessive barking. Pomeranian will usually bark at strangers and other dogs, this behavior may not be a problem if the dog stays indoor but any outdoor experiences are very frustrating for the owner and in the end most choose to stay at home and restrict any exercise to their back yard.

The barking problem can be solved through proper socialization of the 'Pom' as a puppy and exposure to social situations as the dog gets older. You can also solve this problem with behavior training. Whatever the case, be patient with your 'Pom,' do not punish the 'Pom' or yell at him as this will only increase his anxiety and make the behavior worse or cause other problems to develop.

House training is necessary to avoid the dog making any messes in the house. Pomeranians have bladders with a small capacity thus need to eliminate often. For this reason it is necessary to establish a schedule that will allow the Pomeranian to eliminate as many times as he needs to. Stick to the schedule and be consistent. If the dog cannot be trusted around the house, then crate him removing him when he needs to eliminate and taking him to the designated spot. House training takes time and owners should exercise patience and consistency.

Poms are intelligent dogs that will easily manipulate you to get you to do what they want. Do not be too flexible to give your Pomeranian too much leeway otherwise he will just ignore you. In obedience training, Poms are taught some basic commands and also learn tricks well. Do not bombard the dog with new things, commands should be taught one at a time. Make the learning easier for the dog by using one word only when giving commands e.g. Instead of saying 'come here' you can simply say 'come!'

As with other dogs positive reinforcement during training will give you better results in a shorter time than negative reinforcement. Reward for progress and correct behavior. Go slow on the treats, if the dog gets used to receiving treats for doing nothing, he might not be motivated enough to work for the treats during training.

Leash training is also an important aspect your Pomeranian ought to learn.
