Pomeranian - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting a Pomeranian
- 15/01/2011
Breed Description
The Pomeranian is a little dog that belongs to the Spitz family. A descendant of the working sled dog from Iceland and Lapland, these compact dogs toy breeds that ideally weighs between 3-7 pounds, and stands around 8-11 inches.
Coat
The glamorous and crowning glory of the Pomeranian is its coat. This breed has a dense double coat that consists of harsh and standoff guard hairs with a soft, woolly undercoat. This breed has very abundant fur around the forepart of the shoulders, neck, and chest, forming a frill of profuse straight hair that extends over the shoulder. Any color, patterns, and variations are accepted, but red and orange are the most common.
Activity
The Pomeranians are small little dogs that get a lot of exercise by just walking around the house. This breed is perfect for dog owners with limited mobility such as people with disabilities, or the elderly. An adorable lapdog, this breed is content by spending their time in the presence of their owners, whether cuddling in a couch or snuggling at the laps of their owners. The Pomeranian will gladly go for a lively walk or jog along with their owners as well.
Temperament
The Pomeranian is a feisty and lively little dog that is affectionate with family, yet distrustful of strangers. Making great alarm dogs, this breed will gladly announce the presence of strangers. This will not make a great guard dog due to their size. This breed is generally great with older children, but highly intolerant if teased. For this reason, they are not recommended for families with smaller children. These proud dogs will love to perform but tend to be stubborn and willful. They will do well with other animals, yet dominance and aggression may arise with other dogs.
Overview
The Pomeranian is a small breed of dog that belongs to the spitz family. This rounded dog is the smallest of the spitz with fox-like expression and ruff around its neck. This stubborn breed requires consistent training that starts while they are still puppies. Once trained, they make a well-mannered, obedient dog.
Care
The double-coated Pomeranian requires daily attention. Brushing daily will keep their coats shiny, and tangle-free. It is recommended that nail clipping be done while they are still puppies to have them get used to grooming. Their teeth should be brushed daily as well to avoid gum and tooth decay, and ears regularly cleansed with an ear cleansing solution designed for dogs.
Training
Training the willful and dominant Pomeranian should start during puppyhood, with firmness, consistency, and establishment of authority. This breed should be socialized early to avoid being overly suspicious and possessive. Notoriously hard to house train due to their size, they should never be allowed to roam around the house unsupervised until they are mature enough to hold their urine. These dogs are intelligent. With proper training, they can be literally taught to do almost anything.
Character
The Pomeranian is generally intelligent, lively, and alert. These devoted little dogs are the ideal companion dogs especially for those dog owners who are not that active.
