Papillons - An Intelligent, Fun and Loyal Dog Breed

  • 23/11/2010

The Papillon is believed to be originated from the Continental Toy Spaniel. There are two types: The Papillon, whose name is from the French word meaning butterfly, the ears are large & erect with long fringe, the shape resembles a butterfly. The Phalenes ears are dropped down with long fringe. In some other countries they are considered two different breeds but in the United States they are considered the same breed. The same litter can have both the erect-eared and drop-eared.

They have a long silky coat, with no undercoat and a tail with a long flowing plume that hangs on either side. The coloring is white with patches of any color - Lemon, Sable, Black and Tri. Not acceptable colors according to the breed standard are blue and liver, these colors are called "dilute". The genetics of these colors will usually also affect the pigment of the nose and eyes. They should have a well defined white band on the nose and forehead. A "mismark" indicates the lack of color over ears and/or eyes. A mismark can lack color over both eyes, both ears, one eye, one ear or any combination mentioned. They cannot be shown in conformation. Their fur takes 2-3 years to come in completely. They can lose their puppy coat and then the adult coat will come in slowly.

Papillons are highly intelligent, gentle and affectionate. They thrive on stimulation, obedience work, agility trials, dog therapy and trick performance. Papillons like to communicate in a vocal manor. They are known for barking at any noises. At times it seems like they are trying to talk to you. They may display possessiveness of their owner, especially if they believe they are the pack leader. This may cause behavior problems. They are typically easy to house train but not always.

They need regular brushing. They can get matt's, especially behind their ears. Their nails should be trimmed regularly as well as the fur between their toes. Their teeth should be brushed regularly. Daily walks are recommended.

They love playing with their toys. I have a small plastic basket full of their toys. They will dig through it and pick out a toy to play with. They also love the nylon bones.

They are small and fragile and are not recommended for children. They also will climb up high and jump down without fear and can injure themselves. Papillons will eat anything, so they need to be watched, especially around small items.

Some diseases they are prone to are Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Patellar Luxation. They also can be sensitive to anesthesia, the newer anesthesia's are better than the older ones.

Papillons are entertaining, comical and loveable. They are no doubt very smart. They love being with their owner. They are excellent companions.
