Papillon Training Tips For Stay Command
- 23/11/2010
Apart from socialization and potty training, the commands "sit" and "down" are usually the first two behaviors included in papillon training. You do not train a dog with these commands to prove that they are capable of doing various tricks. These commands are important in helping you control and keep these furry four-legged creatures out of danger. However, these commands do not have much value if your papillon gets into the position for a second and immediately bounces back to his previous position. This is when the "stay" command must be inserted in the picture. With this behavior, you are instructing your dog to stay in the position, be it down or sit, until he is told otherwise. Along with "sit" or "down" command, the "stay" command is useful in keeping your pet safe should he decide to do something you think is dangerous or is not acceptable.
Training this behavior may not be the easiest thing to do considering the dog's, especially puppies, lack of attention span not to mention this creature's natural instinct to be around you and follow you around. But with consistency and determination, you will eventually get your dog to stay until you give the release cue.
With your dog on sit or down position, give the command "stay" (while using the hand as a stop sign), take one step away and return to the pup and reward him for not moving. Then gradually increase the distance by one step at a time and the duration of the stay by a few seconds at a time. Repeat the process until your papillon can stay for a minute or so while you are a few feet away. Over time, he should be able to stay for 15 minutes or more and enables you to leave the room and return seeing him in the same location. While it is important to give reward everytime he obeys, you should be careful that he does not move or stand as you are giving the command for it will only make him think that he is being rewarded for not standing or moving, not for staying.
To help your pet learn the behavior easily, it is best to train him in a quiet room away from distractions, then later move to other area around the house and eventually in public places such as dog parks. As trainer, you also have to relax, stay confident and patience while training your dog.
If your dog has mastered the "stay" command, you no longer have to feel embarassed for having a dog that jumps on guests, you will never have to spend your precious time calling for him while he is trying to chase some creatures in the garden and you will never have to calm excited dogs during feeding time. Now, do you still think that the "stay" command is not essential in papillon training?
