Obedience Training For Yorkies

  • 18/06/2013

As a dog breed, Yorkies are simply the best! Yorkies are cute and small, but they are smart and full of personality as well. Yorkshires can be stubborn though, and that's why obedience training is needed to get that Yorkie up to full potential.

The important point here is that obedience training is really good for your dog's safely. Further, it's just good for you and your household. There are some owners that even display their obedience, agility, tracking, and ear

At about 8 to 10 weeks, that is the ideal time to start obedience training. At this time, your obedience training can start out with basic commands. Actually there are Yorkie owners that do not use commands for their Yorkies and they end up with an out of control Yorkie that is aggressive.

The Yorkie breed is eager to learn and this is when commands can play an important role in your dog's life. You can actually get the excess energy out of your Yorkie by making the commands part of the mental stimulation of your dog.

There are some Yorkie commands that simply are a "must" and you have to teach that Yorkie to understand them.

The "sit" command is an important one and there are a lot of Yorkie owners that use a clicker to train their Yorkies. If you don't want to use a clicker, you could give a doggie treat if the sit command is followed. It is important that you do not forcefully push your dog down to sit, as this can cause damage to their body.

The commands work together: when the Yorkie sits, you can introduce the "stay!" commands. So, when the Yorkie is "sitting" you can command "stay!" and slowly step away. Even for a few seconds, the Yorkie stays in the sitting position, you should reward your dog. Try again by starting over if the Yorkie gets up and doesn't comply. Since Yorkies can be stubborn at times, you will need some patience and be consistent until the Yorkie can master the commands.

Give the Yorkie positive attention when the dog complies to your commands. Pet the dog and give verbal praise should be good enough. You can get great compliance from your Yorkie on the more difficult commands by giving the dog some tasty doggy treats.

Your Yorkie obedience training should also include learning to walk on a leash. This means you are walking the dog, not the other way around. You can actually work on the obedience of "sit" and "stay" before you have playtime with your Yorkie. You should also consider having the Yorkie trained on not jumping on people.
