Facts and Temperament

Miniature Schnauzers are alert, active, affectionate, intelligent, and can be a wonderful companion, especially with the proper training. The Miniature Schnauzer is of the schnauzer breed of terrier that originated in Germany in the mid to late 19th century. They were originally used to keep rats and other vermin out of barns and for guarding herds and farms. They make excellent watch dogs and bark to warn, but not for recreation.

Miniature Schnauzers have a great natural protective instinct and are great with children and the elderly. The Official Standard for Miniature Schnauzer describes their temperament as "alert and spirited, yet obedient to command". They tend to be guarded upon first meeting strangers, but once the owners welcome the guest, the schnauzer will usually let its' guard down and react in a friendly manner. Miniature Schnauzers are happy inside the home as well as outside, can be playful and have a natural curiosity. They have lots of energy and like exercise and activity to keep them busy and out of mischief. This breed of dog does not shed its coat, but does require brushing and general grooming. They can be a wonderful addition to a family since they enjoy the activity, energy, companionship, excitement and attention from the different family members.

Training

For Miniature Schnauzer owners or those considering this breed for a pet, it is very important to provide effective training methods. Dogs do not respond well the violence, hitting and yelling. They do respond well to commands, rewards and affection.

They are eager to please, and as a pet owner, more satisfaction comes from having your dog obey your commands and not displaying annoying behavior. House training of course is probably the first and most important thing to be taught. Miniature schnauzers have a special mental trigger the make them want to obey your commands. They just have to be taught. Annoying behaviors to be dealt with would include barking, howling, crying and whimpering all night long. These are behaviors that not only cause irritation from their owners, but also other family members, friends and neighbors.
