Meet The Akita Inu - Dog Of The Nobility
- 25/10/2010
The origin of the Akita breed is Japan, where it was considered the national dog. The Akita was owned only by aristocracy and nobility. The Akita is part of the Spitz-type breeds and is they are the largest of the segment. Because of this, they were used as Imperial guards and hunters. Today, the breed is still used but they are faithful companions and therapy dogs.
The Akita is a big dog, however not a very big one. They stand from 24 to 28 inches at the withers and they weigh from 70 to 120 pounds. The original Akita from Japan should be of one of four colors: red fawn, sesame, brindle and white. Except the white ones, all the other colors should have whitish hair on the cheeks, neck, chest, body, tail and on the sides of the muzzle. In America, all the colors are accepted for the Akita. Also, while in America there is one Akita breed, everywhere else there is the Akita and the American Akita.
Akitas are very intelligent dogs and in case of danger they show no fear and they are spontaneous when it is required. This breed has grown to be a very loyal one, as they are said to be used as babysitters for the imperial babies instead of the humans. They are very careful with the people they know while being wary of strangers. They will do very well with older children they know but do not tolerate unknown children. Its good to keep in mind that they are very protective towards their territory too, and they will not tolerate any other pets. However, their attitude makes them great guard dogs and they are know for barking only when they have a reason to do so.
The requirements in the caring department make this breed a difficult one as they need grooming on a daily basis. Also, bathing is a problem and should not be done unless it's a requirement. A mild shampoo should be use, in order to prevent stripping the natural oils of their coat.
