Maltese Puppy Training Made EASY & FAST in 5 Steps!

  • 22/11/2010

If you follow these five steps your Maltese will grow up to be a loving and well behaved dog and a joy to have around.

Step # 1: Gentle Reinforcement.

"Some important things to keep in mind when training your Maltese puppy are gentle reinforcement"

This statement is so true. If you want a gentle Maltese when it grows up you have to treat your puppy with gentle reinforcement for positive and negative behavior. This means never hit, slap, kick or any other form of physical punishment. If your Maltese puppy does something that is good praise him and reinforce that behavior in him. If your
puppy does something that he should not do say "NO" in a stern voice(with angry) to let puppy know that is wrong.

If you do not have the temperament or the time to train your Maltese then you should think about getting some dog obedience training from a professional. It is better to get some guidance early on when they are just puppies then to delay the training of your puppy.

Step # 2: Biting

All Maltese puppies will bite and chew your body parts or clothing. It is just what puppies do. Their sharp, needle-like teeth can cause quite a lot of pain, and clothing can easily be damaged. It makes sense that we want to teach our puppy that this is unacceptable as quickly as possible. What's more, if puppies are allowed to continue this behavior, by the time they are adolescents or adults they could cause some serious damage!

A highly effective approach is to say 'ouch' in a neutral tone of voice (not loud, not high pitched and not angry) then walk out of the room, shutting the door behind you for 30 seconds. This marks the exact behavior you are trying to punish, then gives a time-out as
a consequence.

Step # 3: House training your Maltese puppy

House training a Maltese puppy is very important for the well being of both the Maltese puppy and the owner. The number one reason that dogs are surrendered to animal shelters is problems with inappropriate elimination, so it is easy to see why proper house training is such an important consideration.

The most successful method for training your puppy is the crate method. If you do not
have a dog/puppy crate, you can cordon off a small area for your puppy where his is unable to move around. This will be your puppy's sleeping area. Dogs do not soil their sleep area, so keeping your puppy in this area, will help establish this area as a no go zone.

If your puppy does not go in this area, you then move him/her to the appropriate area for
eliminating waste at an appropriate time. You should not leave a puppy in its crate/sleep area for an extended period of time, as a puppy does not have a large capacity for waste to begin with. So semi-frequent breaks are required. Each hour if possible.

Step # 4: Barking

Barking is the only way she knows how to communicate. How do you expect her to understand that excessive barking and biting is unacceptable if she is to live with humans? By spending time, energy or money for puppy training you can not only avoid the aforementioned problems but also establish a bond of love and companionship with your canine friend.

By spending time with your Maltese puppy she will become familiar with you and
your house and makes her understand the norms of living with humans and other animals.

Step # 5 Maltese Training Tips

Tip #1: Consistency is Critical
Dogs learn through repetition and consistency. If you consistently reinforce a behavior
with praise, food or another reward the dog will start to offer the behavior more often as a result.

Tip #2: Keep Your Emotions Out of the Process
When you start training your dog to do something approach it with a carefree attitude.
Patience is the key when teaching your dog to do something. Remain patient and relaxed.
Work in small bites and keep the lessons short and to the point. End on a happy
successful note and your dog will become more reliable as a result.

Tip #3: Mark successful behaviors with a sound (clicker) or word like "Yes"
In order for your dog to understand they did something right you must mark the successful behavior immediately with a distinct sound or a word. I use a clicker or the word, "yes" to indicate a success.

By using positive dog training methods you decrease the odds you will make a mistake and hurt the training process and you increase the chances your dog will actually learn something.
