Maltese - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Maltese
- 15/01/2011
Breed Description
Known for having silky white hair, the Maltese is a small toy breed that is believed to have descended from the dogs that originated in Central Mediterranean Area. The full-grown Maltese weigh around 3-7 pounds, and may grow from 9-10 inches tall.
Coat
The coat of the Maltese is long and silky without an undercoat. The color of their coats is pure white, although light lemon or cream is accepted by the breed standards. Pale ivory tinge can also be permitted, with some traces of pale orange, yet considered undesirable.
Activity
The Maltese does not require that much exercise. They should at least be walked daily, with indoor play sessions, and a free run in a securely fenced yard. This breed enjoys being social, so time spent at the park is always recommended.
Temperament
The Maltese has been bred to be warm companion dogs. Thriving on love and attention, this breed is highly playful and lively. Even as they age, their energy level and playful disposition still remains high. Some are known to be snappish around smaller children, and therefore should be supervised when playing. They are active indoors, and they prefer to be in enclosed spaces. Due to this fact, they do great in townhouses and apartments, being a valued pet ideal for urban dwellers.
Overview
The Maltese is gentle yet gearless. Their beautiful white coat provides them the noble appearance. But despite their graceful looks, they are vigorous and playful, with skills not only as a great companion dog, but also a therapy dog. They are very competent in dog sports including obedience, tracking, agility, and tracking.
Care
Daily brushing and combing is required for the long coated Maltese. It is important to be gentle in brushing this breed, as their coat is very soft. The eyes should be regularly cleaned to prevent staining, and beard every after meal as well. Dry shampooing and bathing should be done regularly, always ensuring that they are thoroughly dried and warmed afterwards. Their ears should be kept clean. The hair on top of their head is usually tied in a topknot to keep it away from their eyes.
Training
The highly intelligent Maltese is easy to train. Due to their small size and their charming appearance, they tend to be spoiled, that would usually cause behavioral problems for this breed. This social breed requires a great deal of companionship with other people, and dislike being left alone for extended periods of time. Giving them a toy or a bone for mental stimulation can keep them busy, and less destructive. It is important to make socialization fun for this breed, using rewards such as treats every time they are nice towards strangers.
Character
Exuding delight and joy, the Maltese is an animated, playful and intelligent breed. This social toy dog is content and happy in being the center of attention. This breed is loving, spirited, and very devoted companion dog.
