Long Haired Dachshunds - What You Need To Know Before Owning Long Haired Dachshunds

  • 18/01/2011

The Long Haired Dachshund is a beautiful and elegant dog. He definitely stands out with his long glistening hair. This breed is believed to be a mix of the smooth haired dachshund, bred with spaniels or German Stoberhunds. The Long Haired Dachshund really began to gain popularity and respect in 1923 after winning at Crufts, a very well known dog show.

The Long Haired Dachshund was mainly kept as a pet in America until 1931, when it first became registered with the AKC and began competing in dog shows. In the 1940's, the first Long Haired Dachshund won the prize of all prizes....Best in Show. This is a very popular breed of dog to own and is a great companion and family dog.

Long Haired Dachshund puppies have a coat very similar to an Irish setter. It is slightly wavy, shiny, soft, longer on the underside of the body, the ears, and behind the legs. The dog's hair is the longest on the underside of the tail, which forms a flag as it gets older, while the shortest hair is down the dog's back. If the dog has very thick hair on the paws, known as a mop, it is considered to be a fault. Most veterinarians and breeders will tell you to trim their paws if the hair becomes too long. These Dachshunds require some grooming and trimming to maintain its long coat and to keep it in top condition. It does not require a lot, but daily brushing will go a long way. Due to their long coats, long hair dachshunds were not always well suited to go on ground hunts, so they were used as bird dogs quite often.

These Dachshunds are known to be the quieter and gentler of the three varieties, but this of course depends on the individual dog. Their temperament is known to be very sweet and loving. Long Haired Dachshund puppies are also considered to be the aristocratic of the dachshunds, with a dignified appearance and charming and affectionate nature.

Dachshund puppies come in an assorted range of colors and patterns. They can be one solid color, red or cream, or two toned, including chocolate (and tan), black (and tan), fawn, grey, dappled or brindle pattern.

Overall, owning a Long Haired Dachshund is a wonderful puppy to own. They are gorgeous dogs, known for their sweetness and loyalty. They are less snappy than their smooth hair friends and just love to love and be loved. As long as they are fed and cared for properly, the Long Haired Dachshund will be a part of your family and pack for a long time, outliving a lot of other pets. Be sure to start training and housebreaking your dachshund puppy as soon as possible, as the Dachshund breed is known to be a little more challenging at housebreaking and training. However, they are smart and clever puppies and will be your best friend. If this cute puppy sounds appealing to you, a Long Haired Dachshund just might be the perfect fit for you and your family. It's hard to own just one of these little guys!
