Learn About the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

  • 20/05/2011

Staffordshire Bull Terriers make excellent pets. The breed is not a very old one; it gained recognition as a breed in England only in 1935 and yet today is firmly established as a popular dog breed all over the world.

These dogs came into being after bull dogs were crossed with terriers. Although the breed gained official recognition only around eight decades back, the breed finds mention in texts that go back around three hundred years. These dogs were bred specifically for dog fighting but with time this cruel sport lost popularity and animal welfare laws ensured that it got completely stamped out.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are incredibly muscular and give forth an impression of strength. A broad head and a short muzzle are distinguishing features of the breed. The dogs are deep-chested and with a narrow waist. These are medium-sized dogs and are known for their athleticism. They have a smooth and short coat, the most popular colours being red, fawn, white, black, or blue. The animal does not shed a lot and is easy to groom. Staffordshire Bull Terriers have a life expectancy of about 12 to 16 years.

So long as you give these dogs their daily exercise they will adjust perfectly in an apartment setting. They don't need huge open spaces. But energetic species such as Staffordshire Bull Terriers will chew up a lot of household stuff including your favourite slippers if you don't give them their exercise.

Two really cool aspects of this breed's temperament are that they are not unduly aggressive with strangers. This means that although they will not really be your first choice for guard dogs, they will make great companion dogs given their other attributes. Second, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are very patient with children. That's a big plus with having these dogs as pets.

Male Staffordshire Bull Terriers can be between 14 inches - 17 inches in height and may weigh up to 18 kg. The corresponding figures for females are height up to 15 inches and weight up to 15.4 kg.

These dogs are easy to housebreak; a good mix of gentleness and firmness will have a Staffordshire Terrier pup completely at ease with all family members and also other pets in the household. Remember to let him know early on that you are the top dog of the pack. Once in a while they may show a streak of independence but that's okay. This breed is not particularly known for its swimming abilities. Given their curious and energetic disposition, it is best that the animals are put on leash when you take them out for a walk.

This breed is susceptible to eye problems such as cataracts; hip dysplasia is a hereditary problem that affects the hip joints of Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
