Labrador Retriever Training and an Active Lifestyle
- 12/11/2011
Labrador dogs are active, rambunctious and fun-loving, and they need a good daily dose of exhilarating play as well as regular exercise in order to remain both physically and psychologically happy. In that kind of lifestyle, where you spend at least thirty minutes a day walking your dog, and at least thirty minutes a day allowing for play, you will set up the kind of environment that make Labrador Retriever puppy training a cinch. Combine these elements with consistent Labrador grooming and a healthy food schedule, and your Lab will be happy and ready to please you.
A good healthy dose of exercise and play may not wear your Labrador down; she still may be highly energetic and ready for more when you want to train her, but it will contribute to her overall happiness and feeling of being a part of the pack, of which you are the top dog.
Labrador dogs respond really well to verbal praise, so when training Labrador retrievers it is especially good to shower them with praise when they do well (accompanied with an affectionate pat). Praise rather than snacks are more helpful to your puppy's diet, and it is really easy to fall into a pattern of overfeeding your Labrador if you use snacks and when she does well. Also, when your Labrador disobeys, violence just doesn't work and shouldn't be an option. You may get a form of obedience if you hit your dog on the snout with a newspaper or rub her nose in her own waste, but this is because she is afraid of being in pain. It's far better to motivate her naturally, rather than to let her be motivated by fear. Affirming and reinforcing calming behaviours through verbal praise really does work in Labrador retriever training how to behave.
The trick behind a happy and closely-knit dog family in your home is to avoid favouritism and distinguishing dogs from each other based on their appearance, bad habits, and general attitude. Show your Black Labrador that you love him in the same way you do your white or chocolate-coloured canine. It isn't a good idea to favour your black Labrador retriever over your Chihuahua either (if you have one) just because your black Labrador retriever has a more impressive pedigree (and whopping tag price).
Just like humans, dogs can also have squabbles with each other even because of the simplest of things. Treat all of them well and share an equal amount of care, love, and affection, and you will surely have a generally amiable dog clan at home, even if you have twenty canines living in your house together.
Labs really also enjoy toys, and there are many ways of integrating toys with both play and training. Your Lab may become familiar with and enjoy specific toys, and using them as part of your way of rewarding god behaviour is a positive reinforcement that your Lab will love. With patience, lots of praise, and healthy routines, Labrador retriever training really works.
