Jack Russell Terrier Breed Information

The Jack Russell Terrier was bred in England 200 years ago in order to hunt foxes. This is a very independent and lively dog who is very intelligent. They're very affectionate but can be a handful to train and manage. It is highly recommended that you have lots of experience with smaller dogs if you're going to have a Jack Russell.

The Jack Russell Terrier is a very bold and athletic dog with an incredible amount of determination and an intense desire to hunt things. They are an extremely popular dogs however they are usually behind some pretty entertaining antics. You should be well aware that the Jack Russells that you see on TV and in movies are not the same as the one you would get from your breeder. It takes a lot of time and patience to be able to fully train a Jack Russell to become a civilized companion. They definitely have a mind of their own and won't stand for being bored. If you're not able to entertain them they will find their own amusement and you will probably not like the end result.

If you want a dog that is able to learn tricks or take part in dog sports like agility or play fetch until you can't play anymore they are definitely the companion for you. You just need to be able to put up with a dog that likes to dig and bark and rocket through the house after cats. It is something you will need to put up with no matter how cute you think this dog is. If you have the patience to be able to train them they can be an ideal family dog.

Color and Coat

They come in 3 different coat types: smooth, broken and wired. They also come in many color variations including: tri color, tan and white, black and white, lemon and white. They also come with different markings including: mask with thick blaze, eye patch, mask with a thin blaze, full mask, and full mask with saddle

Size

They will vary in size because they have been bred for different purposes as well as terrain. You'll find that normally they will range between 10 to 15 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 13 to 17 pounds.

Personality

The energetic and high spirited jack Russell terrier puts a lot energy into a very small body. If using they enjoy life with all it has to offer everyone. They are incredibly intelligent but the willful nature of this dog can make it difficult to train. They're very friendly choice people but can become aggressive cords other dogs or anyone animal that resembles prey especially cats.
