Jack Russell Terrier - An In Depth Look

  • 20/11/2010

If you are looking for an energetic dog who is feisty and full of personality, then a Jack Russell Terrier may just be the dog for you. It is a little known fact that this breed is also known by the title 'Parson Russell Terrier' due to the fact that the breed was created by a Reverend Jack Russell who was a parson. His intention was to breed a small feisty dog that would be capable of flushing out Foxes and other wildlife. To his credit, he succeeded! The AKC differentiate a 'Parson's Russell Terrier' from the British 'Jack Russell Terrier' as they feel the breed should have longer legs, whereas the British breed have wide shorter legs.

Weighing in at around 13 to 17 pounds and 10 to 15 inches tall, this breed has an alert appearance and energetic temperament. They will usually have a short coat but there are rough coated varieties around. The color of the coat will be a mixture of tan, black and brown over a white body. They have a short tail that stands upright and due to the feisty nature of this breed, this never stays still very long!

This dog is ideal for apartment living due in no small part to it's size. Exercise is essential though because they are an energetic dog. Unlike some of the toy breeds, a regular walk at least once a day is essential. If contained in a yard, make sure that the fencing is secure. This type of dog was bred for digging and escaping under an insecure fence won't be much of a problem.

Obedience training is often advised as the temperament of this breed may call for it. Allowed to run unchecked, a feisty little personality can become a disobedient one very easily. Ideally this should start when the dog is a puppy so that any bad habits aren't allowed to manifest into adulthood.

They are great with children, especially when it comes to ball games and chasing things. This dog will out play most children as it's energy levels seems unbounded. It takes a lot of play or work to tire out a Jack Russell Terrier.

From a health point of view, they can suffer from eye problems and often deafness, although overall they are a hardy, healthy breed. They do not eat a large amount of food and can be quite cheap to keep. Some Jack Russells suffer from Hyperactivity but this can be controlled using diet and your Veterinarian will be able to advice on this issue. Grooming is necessary once a week just to keep the coat in tip top condition, whilst claws need a close eye kept on them in the event that they grow too long and cause discomfort for your dog.

So, the Jack Russell makes a great family pet and if you have a fun energetic family, this dog breed may be perfect for you.
