Irish Terrier Training: What To Teach Puppies, and When

  • 18/05/2014

It's always fun to have a puppy and one can't wait to train him/her. The main problem that comes in is that many people don't understand what they should and shouldn't do when it comes to puppy training.

If you have a puppy, the first thing that you need to do is to teach the puppy his daily routines. Here you need to teach him where his food and water are located, what times that he should eat, where his bed is, the time he should go to bed, the time that he should get up, where he should go to the bathroom, and where his toys are kept.

Teaching the puppy a routine is very important because it ensures that the puppy is well-behaved. Using the wrong training method is dangerous as it allows the dog to start making decisions on how he wants you to fit into his life. This is dangerous as it tends to be the recipe for conflict and behavior problems.

In addition to teaching the dog his daily routine, you should also teach him words. Some of the most important words that you should teach him include 'No' and 'Good.' For ideal results, these words should be started when the puppy is 2-3 months of age.

While it's recommended that you give treats to the puppy when he does something commendable, you should not rely on food treats to teach your puppy. This is because 'biscuit training' has been shown to make the dog decide when he's hungry enough to do what you want.

Some of the mandatory trainings include:

Crate training: a crate plays a huge role of protecting your puppy from household dangers such as fires. To train the puppy on how to use the crate, you need to ask him to get into the crate whenever you feel that he should.

For example, you should ask him to get into the crate when you are watching TV, or when cooking. You should also ask him to get into the crate when you want the puppy to play with his toys or sleep.

Housebreaking: puppies that are 2-3 months are infants and can't easily control their bladder. The best time of housebreaking is soon as the little organs begin to cooperate. There are a number of methods that you can use to housebreak.

The most common methods include: using a crate, an exercise pen, or a doggy door leading to a small potty yard or litter yard.
