- 15/01/2011
Breed Description
The Ibizan Hound is a deer-like agile dog of the hound group. This elegant breed with remarkable outline may range in weight from 45-65 pounds, and averages in height between 24-29 inches.
Coat
The Ibizan Hound has two types of coat namely: Short, and Wired. The short-haired has the shortest hair on the ears and head, and lengthiest under the tail and back of the thighs. The Wire-haired can be between 1-3 inches long, possibly with thick mustache. There is a lot more fur on the back of the thighs, back, and tail. Both varieties of coat are hard, and neither is more preferable to the other. Their coat color comes in red or white, solid or in any mixture.
Activity
An active and highly energetic breed, the Ibizan Hound is highly recommended for households with a large yard, as they require a great deal of exercise. Securely fenced area should also be provided as this breed is known to easily leap up on a fence.
Temperament
The Ibizan Hound is active, engaging, and moderately intelligent. They are among of the clown dogs of the world, enchanting the people around them with their comical antics. Although they may be a bit stubborn and independent at times, they will take training well if positive training techniques are used, but will recoil at penal-based methods. They are naturally quiet, but will bark if they think the situation calls for it. They are sensitive, and are great around children, and other dogs. They normally are great household pets, but are athletic and active, and therefore require plenty of exercise daily.
Overview
The Ibizan Hound is a deer-like hound that is elegant and agile. Their amber eyes and large ears exhibit an exotic look for this breed. They can have either long wiry coat with bushy moustache, or a smooth coat. This breed has an unsurpassed high and wide jumping skill, which is a great attribute when hunting in the rough terrains of Cuba.
Care
The Ibizan Hound's coat requires minimal grooming. Light brushing and/or combing along with a good rub down of a damp cloth is required for their low-maintenance coats. Nails should be kept short, and exercise should be provided daily.
Training
The Ibizan Hound is an intelligent breed and will learn new tricks with ease. They are very sensitive to noise, so harsh tones should never be used in training this breed. Training in small stages is recommended as they may become easily overwhelmed with overbearing training tactics. This dog requires regular stimulation and learns better in an interactive environment. Harsh manners, criticism, and tone may cause this dog to become aggressive.
Character
The Ibizan Hound is an excellent gundog, as well as a delightful family pet. They are generally gentle, reserved, dignified, and not comfortable in a pressured situation. They are ideal for owners with a confident, calm, and patient disposition with a time to properly socialize this breed.
