Dog Clicker Training

One way to train your Weimaraner is with dog clicker training. The dog clicker training method is a good method for teaching basic commands and dictating who is in control in the relationship. It will not take long for the Weimaraner to become accustomed to clicker training.

How to use a clicker for dog training

The use of the clicker for dog training is to associate the sound of the clicker with a particular command that you give the Weimaraner, the sound is clear and distinct to the Weimaraner. The aim is to instill a specific appropriate behaviour, the sound of the clicker is the reward.

Dog Clicker training does not start with the use of a clicker. Your Weimaraner will learn that the use of the clicker is for good behaviour. Go to your local pet store and buy a clicker and some dog treats.

There are a number of reasons the use of the clicker for dog training is important. The Weimaraner will hear the clicker only when they do a good job and a treat for them. In different situations a spoken command might be used and the distinction in the mindset for the Weimaraner might not be as strong as it could be because of it.

The three basic steps to start dog clicker training

First step is to instill the behaviour

Training the Weimaraner to do want you want. Start by walking the Weimaraner at your side, getting the Weimaraner to sit, and various other commands you want to teach. Keep these commands to the basics when you first start.

Mark it with the clicker and a reward

When you are teaching the Weimaraner the appropriate action for each training step you then reward them with the clicker and a reward. The Weimaraner will very quickly associate the two actions as one.

Reinforce the behavior

It will usually take two or three times before the Weimaraner will pick up on what the action was and start to repeat it whenever you use the clicker. Once you have used the treats and clicker continue to reinforce the behaviour. After a while start to intersperse the treats with patting and praising as you use the clicker. A spoken command takes longer to get through to the Weimaraner.

Transitioning to a Verbal Command

After a while it is time to make the transition from Weimaraner clicker training to a verbal command that you can use anywhere without the clicker. Give the spoken command, use the clicker and then reward the Weimaraner if done correctly. The Weimaraner will get used to the three actions as one. A Weimaraner with clicker training will learn to respond to the transition to spoken commands easily. The Weimaraner will naturally know what actions please you, and the need for treats will be gone.
