I am sitting here thinking to myself why so many Yorkshire terrier owners are trying to find out how to train a Yorkie when there is virtually no chance at all that they are going to follow through with any type of training.

You are probably saying to yourself, "this guy is rude", "he's an idiot", "am I still reading this?" and maybe a few more things are running through your head. A Yorkshire terrier proudly owns me, and I do know what I am talking about.

Another thing that I would like to clear the air about is while I am not a mind reader. That being said, "I am going to guess that the only things that you really want to know how to do is, potty train your Yorkie and teach them to come when called (maybe I am a mind reader).

Let's start off with potty training. Get yourself some puppy potty pads. Place one fairly close to where you exit your home and just leave it there for now and we will talk about how to use it later. There are two times when you can bet your bottom dollar that your Yorkshire terrier is going to have to go potty. One is after sleeping or napping and the other is shortly after eating.

Now that you know when they have to go you can prepare yourself to swiftly and gently carry them outside to relieve themselves. You should also plan to automatically take them outside before you go to bed and shortly after you wake up. Here are two more helpful tips. One is that many Yorkies (all dogs really) will walk around in a circle a few times before they go. If you see them do this then time is of the essence and you will only have seconds to take them out. Two is that some dogs will begin to whine so take that as a sign that they may have to potty. You will know after a few times if the whine meant they had to go to the bathroom or something else.

I mentioned the puppy potty pad earlier and told you that I would explain. Potty pads are mainly for the people who live in a place where taking them outside just isn't possible. Potty pad training is easy and here is how you do it. When you see that your pup is about to go to the bathroom, carry them over to the potty pad and set them on it. It takes very little time for a dog to learn how to use a potty pad. You can still train them to go outside later so it really is not that big a deal. Potty pads work very well. You will notice that I did not mention the crate method. To be honest with you, I am just not a big fan of crating. Personal preference I guess.

How to train a Yorkie to come is really fairly simple also. Get a treat (I use cut up hot-dogs) and once or twice a day practise calling them. As soon as they come give them a little piece of hot-dog. Just practise it a couple of times a day for two to three weeks and your Yorkie will come to you so fast it will make your head spin ( in familiar surroundings that is). One thing that you must never do when teaching your Yorkie puppy to come is never call them to you and then punish them. If you do punish them after they come then next time you call them they will more than likely run away.
