How to Train a Papillon Puppy - Use the Right Mindset When Training Your Papillon Dog

  • 23/11/2010

The Papillon is also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel and the Butterfly dog, because of its fine bone structure and long, wispy hair. Papillons are loyal and lively, gentle and patient. This breed is also not prone to excessive yapping, a problem common in many toy breeds.

Papillons can be fiercely possessive of their owners, so firm, but gentle authority must be exerted by the family. If socialized with cats at a young age, they make excellent companions for feline members of the household. Housebreaking can be a challenge with the Papillon, but consistency will yield the best results. They are generally easy to train and make excellent family dogs. Here are some starter tips on getting into the right mindset when training your new dog:

Acquiring an animal's respect and assurance is the first step towards effectively training him. Setting this foundation is enormously significant when schooling a dog. As societal pack animals, they have a natural need to follow a strong leader.

If you turn into the authority figure for your dog, then he will be confident in his relationship with you making any training task simple for him to figure out. Without establishing respect and confidence first, all of your instruction efforts will in all probability be ineffective. As you interrelate with your dog by becoming the alpha in your personal pack, he will effortlessly give you the loyalty and trust that you warrant. When your dog genuinely trusts you, he knows that his job is to abide by your leadership, and he will choose to do it naturally.

It is crucial to know that first comes respect, then comes friendliness. Of course you want to be affectionate to your dog, but make sure that when you show affection to your dog it is at fitting times. While a puppy is an exuberant force with which to be reckoned, it is valuable to set up some rules early to acquire respectable habits. By establishing rules for your dog to adhere to, you let him understand what you require of him.

Dogs build self-confidence by understanding the rules, and they develop trust when you impose the rules. Every dog in the group understands what is required of it, and knows their point in the pecking order.

Good luck with training your new Papillon puppy!
