Are you trying to find out how to train a Curly Coated Retriever? You've come to the right place!

'Work, work, work.'

If dogs have aphorisms, that would probably be the principal motto of Curly Coated Retrievers. Curly, as it is often called, is probably the hardest working and most athletic of the retrievers.

Curies were originally bred in England as a waterfowl hunter and upland gamer. Curlies are very popular among field sportsmen because they are versatile hunting companions with tremendous perseverance. Curlies will work for as long as there is work to be done.

This very dependable dog is recognized as one of the oldest of the retriever breeds. Curly Coated Retrievers were highly regarded as hunters and they are the favorite breed of avid gamekeepers. They are keen and rugged and are able to adapt to different circumstances.

Curlies are very leggy dogs. In fact, they are the tallest retrievers. It stands about 23 in. tall at the shoulder and weighs about 65 lbs. It is apparent they are built for speed, agility, and explosive power. They are innate athletes.

They have a tight and curly, water-resistant coats hence, its name. Curlies principal color is either solid black or liver.

Curly Coated Retrievers' superior field attributes are matched by its warmth and affectionate temperament inside the household. As long as they exercise regularly, they are no burden inside the house. It is as if they understand the appropriate behaviors out on the fields and inside their home. So, it is imperative to give them a regular 'job' because their instinct is to work!

Curlies are so independent-minded that it might be difficult to train them. Don't be mistaken, they are extremely intelligent dogs but their intelligence is rather instinctive. It is their temperament that makes them less tractable. They are proud and sometimes stubborn. To counter this, you must take charge and be clear of your dominance. Always assume the alpha position and make Curlies mindful of their place in the hierarchy. It is not uncommon for Curlies to have dominance problems.

Curly Coated Retrievers must know their position in the pecking order but keep in mind, that you must never be harsh to them. They don't respond well to this approach. Just be firm but never cruel.

This breed may sometimes seem aloof especially to strangers but they are practically affectionate and friendly to their owners. They pose no problems to children. Curlies adore them. Curlies have long life spans; they'll grow with your kids. This is one dog that your kids will certainly remember until their adulthood.

Curlies absolutely hate repetitive training and drills. You should learn to mix things up when training them. In general, they are poor trick dogs.

To sum it all up, Curly Coated Retrievers are versatile dogs. On the field or at home with the family, Curlies fit in with no trouble. As long as they are exercised regularly, they are well-behaved inside the house. Unlike most constantly hyperactive retrievers, Curlies are mild-mannered with their owners but they are a beast out on the field. A great hunt partner and a perfect domestic companion.
