How to Show a Wirehaired Fox Terrier in a Dog Show

  • 27/11/2010

A Wire Fox Terrier has many functions and jobs to do and one of the jobs they enjoy the most is being in the show ring. Not only does the dog get to show off and prance about proudly, but they get to do fun activities with their master. When the breed is first being trained for the show ring, they have the ability to possess a stubborn streak. True to their breed, a Wire Fox Terrier will soon come to know what is expected of them and perform quite adeptly in a competitive dog show.

Obedience is an area in which the Wire Fox Terrier will perform with the assistance of their master. Though training the breed in obedience can be quite challenging because of their stubborn nature, an owner needs to be firm and unyielding and the dog will form an understanding of what is expected. The Wire Fox Terrier needs to be well versed in the basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come and heel, as well as do what the owner commands on lead, as well as off. The Obedience Titles is judged on three different levels; Companion dog, Companion dog excellent and Utility (working) dog. However, it is important to know the dog's limitations and not expect them to do well as a Utility dog, because they are very stubborn and easily bored, which makes them resistant to this type of training.

Conformation is just one area in which the dog will perform when in a professional dog show. In this event, the Wire Fox Terrier will be expected to conform to a certain set of breed standards. For example, the dog's size cannot be any bigger or longer than that of American Kennel Club standards deem as suitable and correct for the breed as a whole. The coat of a Wire Fox Terrier must be the proper length and have the right texture as the breed standard. There are also other areas of conformation in which the dog will be expected to meet when competing in an AKC show event.

Flyball is a competition in which the Wire Fox Terrier performs very well when in a dog show. The event consists of a Frisbee-like object being hidden and the dog is required to find and retrieve the object within an allotted time frame and when given a command. The event is another sport that a Wire Fox Terrier is excellent at performing. The dog loves activities that keep them active and challenged, working side-by-side with their master. The biggest challenge with a Wire Fox Terrier is to begin training slowly but once the dogs get going they love to participate in these types of events.

Agility competitions is another area the Wire Fox Terrier extremely enjoys, not because of the bonding with their owner, but because they find it both challenging and fun. Agility competition is a fast-paced sport where the dog gets to jump over obstacles on command, crawls through tunnels, climbs and experiences different obstacles along the course. The American Kennel Club offers both standard agility competition and jumping with weaves, which is an even more challenging course.
