How to Keep Your Basset Hound Healthy - Basset Hounds Tips

  • 31/10/2010

To know a Basset Hound is to love a Basset Hound. They are loyal dogs that make great family pets. You can have a Basset Hound whether you live in an apartment in the city or in a house with a large piece of property. They are dogs who do not require a great deal of exercise but a certain amount of exercise will keep your pet healthy and not over weight. In this article I will give you some tips on how to care for your Basset Hound to keep them healthy and happy.

First, take your Hound to the Vet for regular check ups and make sure that all of their shots are up to date.

Second, because Hounds are dogs with large floppy ears, ear care is a major consideration in keeping your dog healthy. You want to make sure their ears are clean at all time and free from sores. If your dog is scratching it's ear very much, you want to check for ear infections. Germs can get trapped in those long ears and cause disease. Try to keep your dogs ears out of their food.

Third, you want to make sure your dog eats a well balanced healthy diet. Hounds tend to gain weight which is bad for their heart and backs. You want to choose a diet that is high in fiber and low fat. Basset Hounds love to eat so be careful to limit table scraps and treats.

In addition, you want to practice good dental hygiene with your Hound. This means checking your dogs teeth and gums often. On a daily basis you want to brush your hounds teeth and gums with a special tooth paste.

Fifth, make sure you properly trim your Hounds nails properly. They have very hard nails that need to be cut often and properly. If they are not cut, they will curl under and hurt your Hounds paws.

Sixth, you want to keep your dogs coat clean and brushed. Hounds have oily coats and therefore need regular baths.

Lastly, you want to make sure your Basset Hound like other digs gets it's preventive medicine on a monthly basis. You want to prevent heart worms, fleas and ticks.
