Getting Your Greyhound's Diet Right
- 26/01/2014
If you're considering adopting a greyhound, it's important to be aware that they have very specific dietary requirements. A low quality dog food packed with preservatives can have a negative effect on their behaviour. Greyhounds can be particularly affected by chemicals in poor quality food, and this can go undetected by their owners. Greyhounds are not greedy animals, so if you're feeding them a specialist food you don't need to be worried about excess feeding. One key ingredient in greyhound food is oil, most commonly fish oil. Fish oils offer a number of benefits that keep a dog's skin health, keep a glossy coat and bright eyes.
Protein is important for active greyhounds. So it's important to read the labels to ensure your pooch is getting the right amount. Choosing a food with around 23-27% of protein is advisable. Greyhounds tend to tolerate food with higher protein levels better than lower protein foods. Dog food formulas are high in additives and can be hard on the digestive system. Retired dogs need less protein, so a food with around 17% would be ideal. Try adding in raw beef and vegetables into their diet once a week. This adds extra nutritional value as well as making meals thoroughly enjoyable.
Avoid changing formulas too often, if you find a food that your dog likes and that he can tolerate, there is no need to change weekly. Changing means inconsistency, and this can be harsh on your dog's stomach. It can also be hard to figure out if he has allergies if you're constantly changing their food. If you do need to change their diet then it's important to make this a gradual process. Stop feeding them if they show signs of n upset stomach. The main thing to look for is watery stool, this shows that they are dehydrated.
Don't feed your greyhound leftovers from the table, because they can't tolerate certain food very well, and greasy foods can be very hard on their sensitive stomachs. Feeding them from the table encourages them to beg. If you do wish to give your dog a snack makes sure it's high in quality. Give them a high quality dog chew or bone.
Greyhounds need a special high in protein diet. You should choose his food according to his lifestyle, the more active he is the more protein he should intake. Avoid changing his diet, once you find a food that works, stick with it. Consistency is the key for their sensitive stomach. Feed him high quality snacks and not scraps of leftover food. Once you have developed a balanced plan for him, he will be healthier and happier.
