German Shepherd Puppies Training for Protection Dogs
- 04/10/2013
German shepherd puppies are among the most intelligent and powerful dog breeds. They are big animals with a strong inclination to obey orders. Training them to represent as protection dogs requires considerable commitment and attention from your end. You have to remember that according to their canine intelligence, they would only listen to you when they recognize you as the leader of the pack. Even when you have only one Schutzhund trained dog at your house, the group mentality still guides the dog who views the family as his/her pack and the home as the den. You have to move forward with a balanced combination of love, strict discipline and food rewards for successful German Shepherd training as Protection Dogs.
Buy Puppies from Ethical German Shepherd Breeders
It is very difficult to train an adult dog. The best time to start training is during the puppy stage. In fact, you need to be very careful while selecting German shepherd puppies. A useful tip is to get the puppy from an ethical breeder who ensures that the little dogs do not have to face any sort of childhood trauma. Unethical breeders have complete disregard towards showing love and affection to puppies. For them, the animal is just another thing that he sells to make profits. This attributes to traumatic experience for the dogs, and as a result, they can be extremely shy or aggressive. Neither of these are good signs for having a loyal and friendly dog.
Useful Tips to Identify an Excellent Puppy
You need to see the puppies in their litter. A good breeder will have all curious and active puppies. The first tip is to avoid having puppies with their tails between their hind legs. The second important sign is to see whether the puppy readily conforms to lying on its back upon your command. This indicates that the dog is eager to accept you as the pack leader and obeying your orders. Some puppies are afraid getting on their back (because of fear and distrust). Some puppies do not stay in that position for long, indicating it wants to be the alpha. It would be difficult to train this puppy.
Introduction to Home
The next basic step of effective German Shepherd training is to introduce the puppy to the home. If he/she feels uneasy at home, it would be very difficult to train. Therefore, always let it settle down at its own pace at the home. To make things easy for the dog, refrain from arranging a welcome party as soon as you brought it to home. In addition, show that you care by placing a clean bowl of drinking water in the floor. Treat it with small amounts of dog foods as rewards, but do not overdo the reward system (stay away from chocolates as they are toxic for dogs). Another important suggestion is always to lead the dog and not letting it lead from the beginning. This creates alpha feelings in the dog.
After the dog adjusts to the home and learns to accept you as leader, you can proceed with other details of German shepherd training. You have to prove yourself as the leader in the perception of the dog. However, do not be too harsh on the dog, as they are emotional beings who take harshness very seriously. Use short commands to let the dog learn the various aspects of living in the family. These include toilet training, and following instructions of sitting, half sitting, laying, and obeying other orders.
